Job summary

Selkirk College in Nelson, BC is seeking a part-time Custodian/Facilities Support for Student Housing. The role covers custodial, general facility and security duties with a 25 hrs/week schedule, commencing September 8, 2026 and ending April 30, 2027.

Pay grade 5 at $29.47/hour under the PPWC Collective Agreement. The position requires high school graduation, custodial training and WHMIS, plus a valid Class 5 license; First Aid is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Dusting, garbage collection, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and washrooms.
• Bed-making, sheet changes, laundry, replenishing coffee, towels and toiletries.
• Carpet cleaning, scrubbing and polishing floors, moving furniture.
• Window washing and pressure washing for exterior maintenance.
• Report maintenance problems and repair needs.
• Maintain and perform minor repairs to tools and equipment.
• Set up and take down for events and functions.
• General maintenance of the facility and replenishing custodial supplies.
• Ensure security and privacy of guests; report intrusions and assist in evacuations.

Job description

Reporting to the Ancillary Services Manager and utilizing a service excellence approach, this position provides custodial services, general facility, grounds maintenance, and security functions for Student Housing facilities. Schedule flexibility and reliable transportation are required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs custodial duties, including:
  • Dusting, garbage collection, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, washrooms, etc.
  • Housekeeping tasks such as bed-making, sheet changing, laundry, replenishing coffee, towels, and toiletries
  • Manual labour such as carpet cleaning, scrubbing/polishing floors, moving furniture etc.
  • Exterior building maintenance, such as window washing and pressure washing etc.
  • Reporting maintenance problems and equipment in need of repair
  • Maintenance and minor repairs to assigned tools and equipment
  • Setting up and taking down for special events and functions
  • General maintenance of the facility
  • Replenishing custodial supplies
• Performs security and service functions, including:
  • Ensuring the security of guest rooms and the privacy of guests
  • Reporting evidence of intrusion or other security issues to management
  • Ensuring that public areas and entrances are clean and orderly at the beginning of the day
  • Assisting in special situations such as power outages, and emergency evacuation
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

This is a temporary, part-time position (25 hrs/week), commencing September 8, 2026, and ending April 30, 2027. Salary will be Pay Grade 5, $29.47 per hour in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
