Job summary

QAI Laboratories in Toronto, ON is seeking a Technician I to Technician II to join our Building Products lab. You will prepare samples, operate testing equipment, and document results to national safety standards.

The ideal candidate holds a technical diploma and 1–3 years in a structural or construction lab environment, with knowledge of ASTM/UL/CSA methods. Flexibility for overtime and travel is expected.

Qualifications

• Must have a Technical Diploma in a related engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
• Preferably 1-3 years related experience in a structural or construction laboratory testing environment.
• Knowledge of US/Canada building codes and nationally recognized safety standards is a plus.
• Ability to read, understand, and apply technical standards toward product certification, testing, and inspection.
• Strong MS Word and Excel skills; proficient with Email and Adobe Acrobat.
• Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) skills essential for testing products.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comfortable with flexible work schedule and overtime if needed.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and set up building product samples for testing following drawings and procedures to CSA/UL/ASTM standards.
• Build test fixtures, frames, boxes and other setups for testing.
• Operate lab test equipment to measure heat, moisture, temperature, and other properties; document results.
• Perform physical testing of fenestration products (windows/doors/ skylights) for environmental performance.
• Write and review concise, objective test reports and documents.
• Travel throughout Canada and the USA as required.
• Conduct factory inspections at remote client sites.
• Interact professionally with customers and colleagues.
• Be part of an energetic team with a can-do attitude.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

QAI has an exciting career opportunity with the Building Products department. We are currently looking for a Junior to Senior Testing Technician to join our Toronto, ON location. Our ideal candidate would be someone who has a technical diploma with four years of experience or more, working in a structural or construction laboratory testing environment in the testing, inspection, and certification industry, with knowledge of common ASTM, UL and CSA test methods relating to building products.

Flexibility in work schedule and working overtime, if needed, is ideal.

DUTIES

• Prepare and set up building product samples for testing, following drawings, and test procedures to nationally recognized building safety standards (CSA, UL, ASTM, etc.).
• Build test fixtures, frames, boxes, and other test setups needed to conduct the testing.
• Operate laboratory test equipment and instruments used to measure heat, moisture, air movement, temperature, and other physical properties. Build test bucks for windows and doors and document results of tests, inspections and evaluations.
• Perform physical testing of fenestration products (windows, doors, and skylights) to determine environmental performance of these products:
  • Insulation materials
  • Building envelope materials
  • Guardrail systems
  • Windows and doors
  • Steel panel products
  • Structural panels
• Become familiar with the QAI quality system and administrative procedures.
• Be able to travel throughout Canada and the USA as business dictates.
• Be able to write and review concise, objective, and informative test reports, and documents.
• Perform factory inspections at remote client sites.
• Be able to interact effectively and professionally with customer and colleagues, as required.
• Must be willing to be part of an energetic team with a can‑do attitude.
• Other duties as assigned by the manager or its designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Possess Technical Diploma in a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Preferably 1-3 years related experience in a structural or construction laboratory testing environment in the testing, inspection, and certification industry
• Knowledge of US and Canada building codes and referenced nationally recognized safety standards is a plus.
• Possess the ability to read, understand, and apply technical standards toward product certification, testing, and inspection.
• Possess superior MS Word and Excel skills, be proficient with Email and Adobe Acrobat.
• Possess “Good Laboratory Practice” skills essential for testing products.
• Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comfortable with flexible work schedule and working overtime, if needed, is ideal.

KEY COMPETENCIES

• Maintains a level of technical competence in the specified field of testing.
• Maintains a level of technical competence in the field of testing to ensure validity of test results.
• Conducts supervised and/or unsupervised testing, data analysis and test report preparation.
• Scope of technical authority shall be limited by the level of authorization as shown in the competency matrix.
• Assists the Project Manager, Engineer, or Operations/Division Manager in the supervision of testing, data analysis and test report preparation.
• Cooperates well with others and acts professionally
