- The candidate will perform detailed and comprehensive inspections of new homes, two-unit dwellings, housing renovations, small commercial, and other buildings regulated by Part 9 of the Code.
- The candidate will ensure that building, plumbing, and HVAC construction comply with the Ontario Building Code, plans, specifications, and documents.
- The candidate will investigate complaints to determine whether any infractions of the Building Code Act or regulations have occurred and take appropriate follow-up actions in accordance with legislative requirements.
- The candidate will issue orders to comply, uncover and/or stop work orders and complete the necessary follow-up in accordance with legislative requirements and departmental procedures and standards.
- The candidate will maintain complete and comprehensive inspection and investigation records, including field notes, deficiency report orders, and photographs.
- The candidate must prepare prosecutions documentation and provide testimony in court as required.
- The candidate will provide technical assistance to customers and the public at the counter and respond to telephone inquiries in accordance with established service standards of the department.
- The candidate must work with plans examiners, professionals, contractors, tradespeople, building owners, homeowners, and other approval agencies to ensure required inspections take place and all violations of the Code are corrected during the construction process.
- The candidate will ensure that all professional reports and tests required by the Ontario Building Code are provided and satisfactory, review the reports, and resolve issues that arise throughout the construction process.
- The candidate must provide comments and input to support the development of technical policies and procedures as required.
- The candidate must maintain current knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and all standards referenced therein.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must have high school (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of two years up to three years or equivalent in Architectural Technology or Civil Engineering Technology.
- The candidate must successfully complete the provincial examinations relating to the building(s) for which the employee will exercise the powers or perform the duties of an inspector under the Act and file each examination with the Province as required by applicable legislation.
- The candidate must have a non-probationary valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.
- The candidate must successfully complete the provincial examinations and file them with the Province as relevant to the role and as set out in the legislation, including Legal, House, Small Buildings, HVAC House and Plumbing House, Building Structural, Building Services, and Plumbing all Buildings.
- The candidate will be required to successfully complete the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing Provincial qualification examinations for General Legal, House, Plumbing House, and HVAC House within six (6) months from the date of hire.
- The candidate will be required to successfully complete the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing Provincial qualification examinations for Small Buildings, Building Structural, Building Services, and Plumbing All Buildings within 12 months from the date of hire.
- The candidate must have over two (2) years up to and including four years of experience.
- The candidate must demonstrate sound judgment, good decision-making, and analytical skills.
- The candidate must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and additional related software.
- The candidate must have exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
- The candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
