Main Purpose and Function

This role involves technical fieldwork of an inspectional nature within a comprehensive hazardous building materials control program for City-owned and occupied facilities and infrastructure. The Hazardous Building Materials Technician conducts assessments, prepares reports, and oversees removal procedures, maintains the hazardous materials inventory, and provides training and project oversight.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

The duties include:

  • Conducting surveys and sampling for hazardous materials such as asbestos and lead.
  • Preparing assessment reports with results and recommendations.
  • Carrying out encapsulation or small quantity removal in accordance with WSBC guidelines.
  • Providing guidance to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Preparing job specifications, participating in contractor selection, supervising projects, and processing invoices.
  • Reviewing project documentation and facilitating awareness training.
  • Updating the hazardous materials inventory database.
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders and responding to hazardous waste requests.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of the twelfth grade, preferably with health and safety courses.
  • Graduation from an Institute of Technology in Occupational Health and Safety or related training is an asset.
  • Significant experience in hazardous material identification, encapsulation, and removal, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of sampling, surveying, encapsulation, and removal methods for hazardous materials.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish good working relationships and work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • A valid BC driver’s license without restrictions.
