Job summary

Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay is seeking a Build Coordinator to oversee residential construction projects, lead volunteers, coordinate contractors, and ensure timely, on-budget completion of Habitat homes throughout Northwestern Ontario.

You will manage schedules, budgets, permits, and quality standards while fostering positive community partnerships and ensuring safety on active building sites in varied weather conditions across the region.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level or diploma in construction-related field is expected.
  • Proven experience in coordinating residential construction projects.
  • Experience leading crews and coordinating volunteers and contractors.

Job description

Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Through affordable homeownership and community partnerships, Habitat helps local families achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance through safe and affordable housing. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Build Coordinator to oversee residential construction projects, lead volunteers, coordinate contractors, and ensure the successful completion of Habitat homes throughout Northwestern Ontario.

Your Day To Day
  • Coordinate all phases of residential construction projects from planning through completion, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, work plans, timelines, and construction records.
  • Coordinate permits, inspections, engineering requirements, municipal approvals, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Monitor project progress, identify and resolve construction-related issues, and ensure adherence to Habitat for Humanity standards, local building codes, and quality expectations.
  • Source, procure, and manage construction materials, tools, equipment, contractors, subcontractors, and skilled trades.
  • Obtain quotations, manage inventory and construction assets, and identify opportunities for donated materials and services.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support volunteers, including conducting site orientations, safety briefings, and assigning work appropriate to skill levels.
  • Foster a safe, positive, and rewarding volunteer experience while collaborating with staff to coordinate volunteer groups, corporate build days, and community engagement activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, suppliers, donors, volunteers, partner families, and community stakeholders.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of safety through site inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, safety reporting, and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Support partner families throughout the homebuilding process and participate in homeowner education and engagement initiatives.
  • Represent Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay at community events, build celebrations, media opportunities, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Prepare project updates, budget reports, grant reporting documentation, and presentations for leadership, funders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Contribute to organizational planning, strategic initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
What You Bring
  • Diploma, degree, certificate, or trades designation in Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, Carpentry, Building Technology, Project Management, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in residential construction, construction project coordination, or project management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing construction projects, including scheduling, budgeting, procurement, contractor coordination, project oversight, and reporting.
  • Experience leading construction crews, volunteers, contractors, trades, or project teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong knowledge of residential construction practices, building systems, construction sequencing, and quality standards.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety legislation, and construction safety requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and site plans.
  • Strong project planning, budgeting, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent leadership, volunteer engagement, communication, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff, volunteers, contractors, suppliers, donors, and community partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Excel, and project management software.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, volunteer-driven, or community-based organization is considered an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.
  • Working at Heights and WHMIS certifications, or willingness to obtain.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification considered an asset.
  • Successful Criminal Record Check.
  • Ability to travel throughout Northwestern Ontario as required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, safely navigate active construction sites, and perform physical duties including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
