Job summary

The City of Kitchener is seeking a reliable custodian to maintain the cleanliness of municipal buildings and prepare facilities for rentals. You will perform cleaning duties across restrooms, floors, surfaces and common areas, and assist with setup and teardown of tables and chairs as required.

Candidates should have basic education and at least 3 months of custodial experience, a valid Ontario driver's license, and knowledge of WHMIS. Flexibility to work varied shifts is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 months experience in a custodial field.
  • Education equivalent to partial secondary school.
  • Willing to work various shifts to accommodate schedules.
  • Valid MTO driver's license in good standing.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS for safe handling of hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect sinks, countertops, urinals, toilets, walls, showers and all touch spots.
  • Clean and polish stainless steel.
  • Clean floors using mopping, floor scrubber, burnishing and buffing tools.
  • Dust furniture, shelves, etc.
  • Clean entrance doors, windows and glass.
  • Clean and disinfect water fountains.
  • Empty garbage, composting and recycling receptacles.
  • Restock paper towels and toilet dispensers.
  • Wipe down lockers.
  • Respond to calls for clean up of spills throughout the day.
  • Sweep and damp mop stairwells.
  • Report damage or vandalism to Supervisor or Facilities Office.
  • Order supplies and restock shelves.
  • Rental set ups and take downs.
  • Dry and wet mop floors prior to set ups.
  • Wipe down tables and arrange tables and chairs as requested.
  • Take down and place tables and chairs back in storage.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and polish stainless steel.
  • Clean floors consisting of dry mopping, wet mopping, floor scrubber, burnishing & buffing.
  • Dust furniture, shelves etc.
  • Clean entrance doors, windows and glass.
  • Clean and disinfect water fountains.
  • Empty garbage, composting and recycling receptables.
  • Restock paper towels and toilet dispensers.
  • Wipe down lockers.

Education
  • Minimum equivalent to partial secondary school education.
Experience
  • Minimum 3 months experience in a custodial field.
Additional Requirements
  • Willing to work various shifts to accommodate work schedules or special projects.
  • Valid MTO driver’s license in good standing.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of proper floor care and cleaning techniques, as per industry standards.
  • Demonstrated custodial experience.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for the safe use and clean-up of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use of custodial equipment such as floor-scrubbers, sweepers, burnishers, floor buffers, and steam cleaners for walls and tiles and related procedures.
  • Well developed customer service skills.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
