About the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society

The Canadian Hemochromatosis Society (CHS) is a national health charity based in Richmond, BC, dedicated to raising awareness, promoting early diagnosis, and supporting individuals affected by hereditary hemochromatosis, Canada’s most common genetic disorder. Our mission is to end the suffering and premature deaths caused by iron overload.

Role Overview

CHS is seeking a dedicated individual from British Columbia to join our Board of Directors as a Board Member. We are looking for candidates with expertise in accounting, finance, or law who are passionate about health advocacy and nonprofit governance. This volunteer leadership role offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to our mission.

Responsibilities
  • Financial Oversight: Monitor the organization's financial health, ensure accurate record-keeping, and compliance with Canadian nonprofit regulations.
  • Budget Management: Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and present annual budgets and financial reports.
  • Policy Development: Establish and review financial policies, investment strategies, and risk management practices.
  • Audit Coordination: Liaise with external auditors to facilitate annual audits and ensure transparency.
  • Legal Compliance: Ensure adherence to CRA regulations and other legal requirements pertinent to nonprofits.
  • Board Participation: Attend quarterly meetings and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Legal Oversight: Provide guidance on governance, compliance, contracts, and risk management.
  • Policy Review: Assist in updating bylaws and governance frameworks to align with Canadian nonprofit law.
  • Risk Management: Advise on organizational risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with CRA charitable regulations and applicable laws.
Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice law in British Columbia or significant legal training with nonprofit or charitable sector experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in corporate law, nonprofit law, governance, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with Canadian charity regulations, governance best practices, and risk management.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.
  • Professional designation in accounting (CPA) or legal background with nonprofit experience.
  • At least 5 years in financial management, accounting, or legal advisory roles.
  • Knowledge of Canadian nonprofit governance, CRA compliance, and financial reporting standards.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to CHS’s mission and values.
Time Commitment
  • Approximately 5–8 hours per month, including meetings and committee work.
  • Opportunity to impact public health and awareness.
