Job summary

Heritage Park is seeking a Black Cultural Interpreter/Demonstrator for the 2026 season, to interpret Black history and lived experiences in Calgary and Southern Alberta. You will present programs and living-history demonstrations inside exhibits and outdoor areas, engaging visitors with storytelling and tours.

The role requires strong public speaking, teamwork, flexibility, and a deep appreciation for diverse cultures.

Qualifications

• Completion of some high school. Post-secondary education in related areas would be an asset.
• Comfortable engaging with large volumes of people; good public speaking skills
• Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations
• Strong verbal communication skills and demonstrated teamwork ability
• Lived experience as part of the Black or Black Canadian community
• Experience working with diverse groups of people
• Previous experience in customer service, museum education, or interpretation
• Knowledge of Black community’s traditions and culture in the late 1800s-early 1900s in the Canadian West

Job Title: Black Cultural Interpreter/Demonstrator

Department: Programming and Experience – Interpretation

Position Type: Seasonal

Hourly Rate: $16.50

Expected Start Date: September 5, 2026

Contract End Date: December 31, 2026

Shift Availability: Minimum two shifts per week, both weekdays and weekends.

Hours: Varies, based on operational need

Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Exhibit Supervisors and Public Programming Coordinators, this position will interpret the history and culture of Black People and lived experience in Calgary and Southern Alberta inside designated exhibits or outdoor areas and relay historical information to the public through a variety of interpretive techniques and demonstrations.

Responsibilities:

Interpretation and Visitor Engagement

• Educates and engages the public in the history of the Black community’s immigration and lived experience during the late 1800s and early 1900s;
• Delivers programs and hand-on activities to engage the public using techniques that include living history demonstrations, stationed interpretation, storytelling and in particular, public tours.
• Works as part of a team of interpreters in period appropriate clothing portraying daily life;
• Prepares sites and materials and ensures proper care of associated artifacts;
• Operates the assigned exhibit(s) and associated equipment, where applicable, in accordance with safety, security, and cleaning standards;
• Provides customer service and information to guests in a friendly manner;

Required Qualifications:

Special Clothing and Equipment:

• Appropriate costuming will be provided by Heritage Park
• Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee.

Special Working Conditions:

• The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors; and
• This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items, stand for long periods of time and walk throughout the Park for extended periods

Hours of Work:

• Hours available mid-May to Labour Day, with weekend work during September and October (until Thanksgiving), part-time hours also available throughout the season;
• Schedule varies and may include weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays.
