Job summary

University of Guelph is seeking a Temporary full-time Collections Technician in the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, based in Guelph, Ontario. This role supports the sourcing, digitization, and archiving of biological specimens and prepares samples for genetic analysis in the CCDB.

The successful candidate will manage data entry, specimen preparation, and tissue sampling, with emphasis on accuracy and organization in a high-throughput lab environment.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in entomology, invertebrate zoology, biology, or related field preferred.
• Ability to identify insects to the order level; knowledge beyond order level is a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and spreadsheet-based data management.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Experience with databases is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Data capture in an internal database.
• Specimen preparation (pinning insects, handling fluids) and sorting by size/tamily group.
• Tissue sampling for DNA analysis and archiving specimens.
• General laboratory maintenance: sterilizing equipment and maintaining supplies.
