About the position

The Specimen Project Officer works under the supervision of the Botany Curator to process and digitize high priority herbarium specimens, making the records available internally and externally. For the current term, priority specimens are those recently transferred from Canadian National Parks in Ontario and Manitoba. In addition to mounting, repairing, handling, imaging and databasing specimens, they facilitate and coordinate the flow of data and images from various points of capture into the Museum’s collection management information systems, and act as main daily points of contact regarding project workflows, progress and challenges

Eligibility criteria

Education and training

Completion of a post-secondary education in Sciences, Museum studies, Library Sciences (or other relevant field of study) or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

Language requirements

English or French is essential
Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

Experience

• Experience with high volume databasing and digital file management
• Experience with software relating to data and file management;
• Experience with digital still photography;
• Experience in natural history specimen processing, handling, and transportation, and in the application of preventive conservation methods;
• Experience working in collaborative work environments.

The following experiences are considered assets:

• Basic programming
• Experience with technical tasks relating to collection management in a natural history museum
• Experience working with volunteers and junior team members.
