Job summary

YWCA Hamilton is seeking a Child Care Worker for the Before and After School program in Hamilton, Ontario. This temporary role offers 27.5 hours per week, start date TBD, and includes on-the-job training.

You will create a nurturing learning environment, implement the YWCA curriculum, communicate with families, supervise children and volunteers, and follow health and safety policies to support children's growth and well-being.

Qualifications

  • Completion of 2 years’ college in early childhood education, child and youth, social work, recreation and leisure, or related fields.
  • Experience in a licensed child care setting is an asset.
  • HIGH FIVE® PHCD training is an asset.
  • Vulnerable Sector check and TB/Immunization as required.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Create a stimulating, nurturing environment and supervise children in the Before/After School program.
  • Develop and facilitate programs for 4–12 years old following YWCA curriculum.
  • Maintain communication with parents, families, partners and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Creates a stimulating and nurturing environment for children to learn and grow, ensuring the safety of children enrolled in the Before and After School program through direct supervision, and attendance protocols;
  • Develops and facilitates before and after school programs for students 4 to 12 years of age in their school according to YWCA philosophy;
  • Implements the YWCA curriculum to meet the needs, interests and talents of all children;
  • Participates in all activities with the children;
  • Updates, develops and ensures positive, professional communication with parents/families, community partners, school personnel, outside agencies, co-workers and support staff, an on an ongoing basis;
  • Supports the supervision of students and volunteers as required;
  • Supports staff and classrooms as needed (e.g. staff breaks, programming time, etc.);
  • Administers authorized medications and creams in accordance with policy;
  • Ensures classroom environment is kept clean and neat, including all activity and program areas, and common spaces, including toy washing and sanitizing;
  • Works with limited pieces of child and family confidential data, with duty to report;
  • Captures and monitors the children’s development goals and progress through weekly documentation;
  • Ensures that written records are accurately documented and maintained including attendance records, symptoms of ill health, daily classroom logs, etc.;
  • Prepares reports and statistics for Supervisor as required;
  • Complies with the Child Care Early Years Act and YWCA Policies;
  • Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
  • Supports other child care programs with when needed;
  • Participates in mandatory organizational and departmental trainings and meetings;
  • Prepare snacks while adhering to the YWCA Hamilton Menu and Public Health guidelines;
  • Must be able to supervise large groups of children during offsite excursions such as field trips and swimming;
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of 2 years’ college in early childhood education, child and youth, social work, recreation and leisure, or recreational therapist programs or equivalent;
  • Experience in a licensed child care setting is an asset;
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Health Child Development (PHCD) training is an asset;
  • Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police check or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Must provide a TB test, proof of Tetanus (within 10 years) and proof of MMR immunizations;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Ability to bring a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective to work;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset;
  • Must have basic computer knowledge.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Works 25 to 37.50 hours per week;
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), bending and stooping;
  • Must be able to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round; may be exposed to heat, humidity or cold
