Reporting Relationship
The Band Representative will report to the Family Resources Supervisor.

Position Summary
The Band Representative will represent MFN band membership children regardless of location, before the courts. The Band Representative will ensure the heritage, cultural traditions, identity, and rights of M’Chigeeng First Nation children are protected and preserved by all parties involved in child welfare matters.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all MFN Protocols & By-Laws.
  • Act as an advocate at all child protection hearings and lobby for prevention and intervention solutions directly affecting band membership children.
  • Process intakes and assessments, obtain informed consent, collect client family background/case history, and develop a plan of care.
  • Work with clients and appropriate workers to assess situations, identify issues, and develop safety plans.
  • Practice strict confidentiality, privacy, ethical, and non-bias approaches.
  • Assist in seeking appropriate extended family placements and develop alternative safety plans in consideration of the child’s needs and prevention of removal from the community.
  • Respond and intervene in family crisis situations where children require immediate attention and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
  • Submit statistical reports to C&C pursuant to By-Law Care of Children of the Members MFN # 01/01.
  • Accompany CAS workers on daily visits/investigations.

Qualifications & Requirements

Preferred:

  • BSW and/or College Diploma in Social Work.
  • In good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers

Minimum:

  • College Diploma in Human Resources or relevant program of study, or Post-Secondary Diploma program in a relevant field of study, or 3-5 years related work experience in a First Nation community.
  • Knowledge and clear understanding of the Child & Family Services Act.

CRC/VSS Rationale: M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate, and the CRC must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to sexual interference, sexual assault, or related charges. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an original.
