Attawapiskat First Nation islooking to hire a full-time Band Representative to work in southern, Ontario.
The Attawapiskat First NationBand Representative Program provides support and advocacy to the Nation’schildren, youth and families on and off-reserve when a Children’s Aid Society(CAS) or First Nations Child and Family Services Agency (FNCFS Agency) becomesinvolved with a family.
KeyResponsibilities:
Advocacy:advocate for the rights and well-being of Attawapiskat’s children and youthwithin the child welfare system.
Collaboration:work cooperatively and collaboratively with CAS and FNCFS Agencies,community leaders and families to develop and implement culturally appropriateplans of care that reflect the child's best interests. Work collaborativelywith Attawapiskat’s Band Representative Program team and community partners toidentify supports and services to better support Attawapiskat’s children andfamilies when they are involved in the child welfare system.
CaseManagement Support: Assist, support and advocate for Attawapiskat’schildren and families while a matter is before the courts with the support andrepresentation of Attawapiskat’s legal counsel for child protection matters.
CrisisIntervention: Support familiesexperiencing crisis by providing support, resources, and direct assistance asneeded.
Reportingand Documentation: Maintain accurate records, maintaining strict privacyand confidentiality in accordance with relevant legislation and Attawapiskat’slaws and by-laws.
Qualifications:
Education: degree or diploma in SocialWork, Indigenous studies or a related field are considered an asset but notrequired. Equivalent experience may be considered.
Experience: Minimum 2 years experience inchild protection, social services, or community advocacy, preferably withinFirst Nations communities.
Cultural Competency: Strong understandingof First Nation cultures, traditions and the historical child welfare contextthat has impacted Indigenous communities.
Communications Skills: Good verbal andwritten communication skills, effective note-taking and knowledge ofSharevision is considered an asset but not required.
Travel: travel is required around thesouthern Ontario area and travel to Attawapiskat from time to time. A Driver’slicense is required.
