Balmoral Hall School - Assistant Dean of Boarding

Balmoral Hall is an independent school for girls from Junior Nursery to Grade 12. The School encourages girls to discover their passions in academics, arts, and athletics, while welcoming boarding students from around the world. Balmoral Hall inspires the imagination and courage to reach, to lead, to care.

ASSISTANT DEAN OF BOARDING

Reporting to the Dean of Boarding, the incumbent in the Assistant Dean of Boarding position has responsibility during late afternoon and evening shifts for leading a team of boarding assistants providing day to day care and supervision for up to 70 adolescents in the Balmoral Hall School Boarding Program. The Assistant Dean of Boarding is responsible for a range of key duties and activities, including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining a supportive, safe and healthy living environment for all boarders;
  • Ensuring compliance with all boarding housekeeping, health, safety and respectful workplace guidelines;
  • Providing direction and support to boarding assistants;
  • Acting as a mentor and role model to students and boarding assistants;
  • Ensuring the physical and emotional well‑being of boarders during their shift;
  • Providing support and assistance to boarders in all areas of their activities of daily living;
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Full time position working 40 hours per week – Variable afternoon and evening hours, may include weekend and overnight shifts
  • Boarding is closed for 6 weeks during summer months; two weeks during Winter Break and one week at Spring Break.
  • During the summer closure period, employees shall use accrued vacation and any accumulated banked time.
  • Must be willing to work varied shifts and be available to fill additional shifts on an emergency basis.
  • Must participate in special events and out of town field trips
  • Attendance at work is a critical requirement of the position and the incumbent must be able to attend work on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Possess a class IV driver’s license or able to obtain one within three months of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively engage and communicate with adolescent girls

Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to secure the cooperation of others to achieve a common goal

Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and carry out events and activities that enrich the boarding experience for the boarding students

Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and good problem‑solving skills

Ability to maintain composure and cope when faced with unexpected new situations and unexpected difficulties

Ability to take charge and motivate others

Must have an appreciation and sensitivity to different cultures

Ability to understand and respond to boarding organizational needs and looks for opportunities to improve the boarding experience for each student.

Education and Experience: Post‑secondary education in the human services and at least 2-3 years’ direct experience working with youth or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
