Job summary

Universal Rail Solutions in Western Canada is seeking an experienced Ballast Regulator Operator to join our rail production team. The role focuses on shaping, distributing, and profiling ballast to maintain track geometry and drainage, with emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.

You will perform shoulder work, brooming, finishing, and daily equipment inspections, travel across sites for 5–21 day assignments, and work days, nights, weekends, and extended shifts as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one season operating a ballast regulator in a railway production environment.
  • Proven ability to shape ballast and finish track sections to spec.
  • Strong understanding of railway maintenance activities and safety.

Join Universal Rail Solutions as a Skilled Ballast Regulator Operator

Universal Rail Solutions is seeking experienced Railway Ballast Regulator Operators to join our team across Western Canada.

This is a specialized railway production position requiring direct experience operating ballast regulators.We are looking for operators who understand the importance of proper ballast profiling, shoulder maintenance, ditching, and track finishing activities that support safe and efficient railway operations.

Location

This position requires travel throughout Western Canada, with assignments ranging from 5 to 21 days at a time, depending on project and shift requirements.

What You'll Do

As a Ballast Regulator Operator, you will:

  • Safely operate a railway ballast regulator in accordance with railway operating rules and company procedures.
  • Shape, distribute, and profile ballast to maintain proper track geometry and drainage.
  • Perform shoulder work, brooming, and finishing operations following tamping and surfacing activities.
  • Conduct daily inspections, servicing, and minor maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Identify and report equipment defects or mechanical issues.
  • Work closely with supervisors and production crews to achieve project goals safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with general railway labour duties when equipment operation is not required.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety, productivity, and quality workmanship.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum one season operating a ballast regulator in a railway production environment.
  • Proven ability to perform ballast shaping, shoulder work, brooming, and finishing operations.
  • Strong understanding of railway maintenance and construction activities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in machine inspections, operation, and maintenance.

Licences & Certifications

  • Appropriate license or qualification required to operate assigned equipment such as CROR.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (non-GDL) or Class G.

Travel & Scheduling

  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote work locations across Western Canada.
  • Available to work days, nights, weekends, and extended shifts as required.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to meet fit-for-duty requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

Security & Compliance

  • Successful criminal record check.
  • Obtain and maintain all required eRailSafe certifications and credentials, including background screening.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum one season of ballast regulator operation on a railway production gang.
  • Strong understanding of ballast maintenance and track finishing standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain railway equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively within a production crew environment.
  • Willingness to perform general labour duties when required.
  • Strong safety mindset and situational awareness at all times.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisors and crew members.
