Job summary

Calgary Co-op is seeking a Bakery Decorator to deliver high‑quality customer service while maintaining safe, efficient bakery operations. You will decorate, display, stock, and price baked goods, ensuring presentation and inventory accuracy in a fast-paced store setting. The role requires Grade 12 and bakery decorating training/experience, with in-house testing.

Supervisory experience and decorating courses like S.A.I.T. or Wilton are advantageous.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or acceptable education/experience mix.
  • Bakery and decorating training and experience.
  • Must pass in-house Bakery Decorator testing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service and maintain positive relations with customers.
  • Stock, display, face, and maintain presentation and stock levels.
  • Ensure price integrity and handle substitutions and price changes.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety on the sales floor and back stock area.
  • Follow health/safety, food safety and environmental regulations.
  • Care for equipment and report repairs; organize inventory.
  • Order merchandise and supplies; receive and verify invoices and transfers.
  • Supervise in the absence of supervisor/manager; train staff and provide feedback.
  • Finish, inspect, and decorate baked goods; assist in product development.

The Bakery Decorator is responsible for ensuring customer service is provided through maintaining a safe and efficient operation while adhering to all Company policies, procedures and standards. The role reports directly to the Bakery Supervisor/Bakery Manager and includes the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Provides customer service and maintains positive customer relations through proper handling of customer questions, comments, requests and complaints, working proficiently and friendly in a diverse team environment.
  • Performs all aspects of the Bakery Decorator functions including stocking, displays, facing, and ensures presentation and stock levels are maintained.
  • Handles merchandise ensuring quality, minimizing damages and markdowns, providing substitutions and ensuring price integrity including price changes.
  • Performs general cleanup duties such as cleaning spills and display fixtures, keeping the sales floor and back stock area clean from cardboard and debris and disposing of garbage.
  • Performs duties following established Occupational Health & Safety, Food Safety, and Environmental regulations and policies to ensure the health and safety of all staff and customers.
  • Ensures proper care, use and maintenance of equipment and tools, reporting repair requirements to the Bakery or Duty Manager.
  • Responsible for ordering merchandise and supplies.
  • Responsible for receiving including reviewing and verifying invoices, returns, transfers, claims, and proper storage of products.
  • Responsible for organizing and conducting inventory.
  • Provides direction and supervision in the absence of the Supervisor or Manager, including:
    • Ensuring daily functions of staff are carried out efficiently.
    • Ensuring health and safety rules and regulations are followed.
    • Providing verbal input for employee performance and conduct.
    • Conducting technical training (e.g., department orientation, commodity specific functions) with day‑to‑day instruction and verbal feedback.
    • Applying effective customer service techniques.
    • Replacing shifts and authorizing appropriate documents.
    • Finishing, inspecting, preparing, and decorating all baked goods; cutting and slicing all prepared products as required.
    • Assisting in the development of new products, creating designs and special orders.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Grade 12 or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Combination of bakery and decorating training and experience.
  • Must pass in‑house Bakery Decorator testing.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Supervisory experience.
  • S.A.I.T. or Wilton Decorating course or equivalent experience.
