Job summary

GFL Environmental is seeking an AZ Operator for our Stevenage site in Ottawa. You will drive and operate a range of trucks including combination units, vacuum units, hydro excavation units, box trucks and tractor trailers with AZ/DZ credentials.

The role emphasizes safety, inspections, and compliant loading. Responsibilities include securing loads, maintaining logs, and delivering to customers with professional service.

Qualifications

• AZ or DZ license with a clean Driver’s and CVOR abstract.
• Experience hauling tankers and operating roll-off bin trucks is an asset.
• Able to work irregular shifts and adapt to a rotating schedule.

Responsibilities

• Oversee cargo handling and secure loads, including equipment preparation and safe practices.
• Perform trip inspections on equipment and loads to ensure safety and roadworthiness.
• Comply with legislation on safe operation, hours of service, health and safety, and weights.
• Maneuver trucks into loading/unloading positions and verify equipment positioning.
• Check vehicles before driving for mechanical/safety readiness.
• Record logs, bills of lading, and manifests; report defects or incidents.
• Load/unload trucks and ensure proper fastening of loads at delivery.
• Provide feedback to supervision regarding customer or mechanical problems.

Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for an AZ Operator for our Stevenage site in Ottawa!

The successful candidates will drive & operate a variety of our industrial trucks/units, such as:

• Combination units.
• Power vacuum units,
• Hydro excavation units.
• Box trucks
• Roll-off bin units
• High-pressure water blasters.
• Tractor trailers (AZ/DZ drivers)

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee cargo handling and secure loads, including equipment preparation, application of safe practices, compliance with applicable Acts and regulations.
• Perform trip inspections on equipment operated and load, ensuring safety and roadworthiness.
• Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, driver’s hours of service, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, customs and immigration and weights and dimensions.
• Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
• Check vehicles before driving them to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
• Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.Maintain logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status, following applicable state and federal regulations.
• Record and maintain required documentation including driver logbook, bills of lading, manifests etc. by manual or electronic means.
• Loading and unloading of trucks.
• Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure that load is properly fastened down and is secure.
• Deliver to product and proper paperwork to our customers in a courteous and timely manner.
• Provide feedback to supervision regarding customer problems, mechanical problems, or delivery problems.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:

• Ability to drive a manual transmission but both auto/manual transmissions are available Monday-Friday (for a day shift) and on-call every 4th weekend
• AZ or DZ driver’s license with a clean Driver’s and CVOR abstract.
• Experience hauling tankers
• Experience using a roll-off bin truck is an asset.
• Ability to work an irregular work schedule (extended hours and variable shifts).
• Ability to work Monday- Friday (November - April) & Tuesday- Saturday (April- October).
• Ability to work in a confined space environment and/or at heights.
• Mechanical knowledge.
