Job summary

Manulife is seeking an experienced Investor Relations leader in Toronto to drive quarterly earnings communications, collaborate with finance and strategy teams, and engage with institutional shareholders and analysts. This role requires deep financial acumen, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage a global IR program.

The successful candidate will develop materials for earnings calls, oversee messaging across markets, and lead IR events while traveling as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree in finance/accounting/actuarial.
  • CA, CFA, FSA or MBA is desirable.
  • 10+ years of related work experience.
  • Strong understanding of financial and capital markets.
  • Past Equity Research, Investment Banking or Institutional Sales experience is a definite asset.
  • Good understanding of the insurance business and/or Manulife’s products and distribution strategies is desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical capability and financial modeling experience.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Prioritizing tasks to meet client demands & changing market conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare investor materials for quarterly results, including earnings release and slides for conferences or webcasts.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Strategy and Media Relations on quarterly messaging and strategy.
  • Monitor investor sentiment and summarize expectations for the quarter to senior management.
  • Serve as main contact for institutional shareholders and analysts.
  • Review quarterly deliverables like fact sheets and analyst previews.
  • Lead global IR marketing and shareholder engagement plans and events.
  • Coordinate messages with senior management for investor interactions.
  • Prepare materials for non-deal roadshows and investor days; include speaking notes.
  • Travel may be required for IR events.
  • Review external disclosures to meet investor needs.
  • Communicate strategic direction and performance to the investment community.
  • Provide quarterly reports with shareholder analysis to Head of Investor Relations and the Board.
  • Develop and improve IR processes and manage vendor relationships.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects as needed.

Job description

Position Responsibilities
  • Primary responsibility for the preparation of investor communication material regarding quarterly financial results: Lead the development and drafting of earnings press release, developing slides and speaking notes for the earnings conference call/webcast;
  • Collaborating with the Segment Finance and Strategy teams, Group Finance and Media Relations to develop the quarterly communication strategy and key messages;
  • Review and communicate to senior management the investment community’s sentiment and expectations for the quarter;
  • Act as primary contact for institutional shareholders and financial analysts with respect to following up on any call details or questions related to the financial results;
  • Review of other quarterly deliverables including company fact sheets, analyst preview reports, post-call summary reports, etc.;
  • Lead the planning and implementation of a comprehensive IR marketing and shareholder engagement plan, including: The identification of key global investor targets; The annual development and implementation of a global IR marketing schedule; Plan and implement investor relations marketing events;
  • Work with senior management to ensure the appropriate messages are included in all investor interactions;
  • Prepare and review supporting materials related to non-deal roadshows, investor conferences and Investor Days, including slides and speaking notes;
  • Participation at the IR events will require travel;
  • Review external financial disclosure documents for Group Finance and financial press releases for Media Relations to ensure investor needs are met;
  • Play a leading role in communication with the investment community, including institutional shareholders and financial analysts: The incumbent must quickly become well versed in and be able to articulate the strategic direction of our businesses around the world, the company’s performance and the key factors driving the results;
  • Work with the Head of Investor Relations to provide senior management and the Board of Directors with quarterly reports including institutional shareholder analysis and MFC share performance analysis;
  • Develop and enhance processes & procedures to support an effective IR program;
  • Manage relationships with external vendors;
  • Participate in ad hoc or special projects as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Marketing/communications experience, particularly related to IR would be an asset.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset. If the successful candidate is in Québec, proficiency in both languages will be required to support clients from various provinces outside of Quebec.
Problems/Challenges
  • Must effectively manage the investment community’s expectations and requests for information;
  • Must be able to exercise judgment in communication of results / events to outsiders;
  • No margin for error in disclosure of information to outsiders;
  • Very tight deadlines – priorities can change intraday;
  • Keeping abreast of changes in corporate disclosure policies and incorporate changes into quarterly and annual reports;
  • Will require some period of extended hours including evenings and weekends;
  • Will require occasional travel.

Salary and Location

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Working Arrangement: Hybrid

Salary range is expected to be between $129,800.00 CAD - $241,200.00 CAD. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
