The opportunity

CBC Windsor is looking for an energetic and enterprising Associate Producer/Technician to play a vital role on our early morning program Windsor Morning.

This position strikes a true balance for that candidate who takes pride in journalistic storytelling and is a proficient live-to-air radio engineer. You believe in the value of local journalism and you are committed to serving the audience. You’re tapped into local communities throughout Windsor-Essex and you want to give the newsmakers, however big or small, a voice on multiple platforms.

In this role, you begin your day as the technical wiz who brings our live morning show to air every weekday – operating the console, troubleshooting if something is amiss, making sure everything rolls out smoothly and sounds great and ensuring the audio quality is excellent. You are calm and level-headed in a high-paced, early morning environment. You are a team player who can work well with different people and always jumps in to help whenever needed. You’re comfortable on air, giving live traffic updates or bantering with the host.

Afterward, you enjoy the morning conversation with other members of the program team, dissecting the day's news, looking for story follows and pitching original current affairs ideas for the next day. When the team agrees upon their chase plan, you pivot to production: with appropriate direction from one or more producers, you chase guests, prepare interview scripts, produce audio-rich paks, develop regular features and program segments, and assist with pre-tapes for the next day.

You have a proven track record in live-to-air radio and are skilled in gathering and mixing audio elements for broadcast. You are comfortable recording in-studio as well as mounting live shows in remote locations. The ideal candidate can also create content for multiple platforms, and demonstrate exceptional skills in verbal and written communication, as well as story generation.

Key tasks

  • Engineer and direct the program, live or recorded, in the studio or remote location ensuring excellence in audio quality.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems that arise during live broadcasts
  • Ensure that equipment, facilities, program sources and personnel are available to meet operational and program requirements.
  • Set up and operate equipment to meet program and production goals.
  • Play a key role in programming music, sound effects and/or actuality that fits the mandate of the show.
  • Pitch and produce story ideas and program content. This may involve chasing, gathering and editing sound-rich audio, researching, and/or writing current affairs interview scripts.
  • Present on-air as needed for the role.
  • Obtain studio crews, lines and other technical and/or production resources required by the program on behalf of producers and freelancers.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to perform a number of functions efficiently and quickly.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, work overtime and travel as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent
  • Job requires three to five years' experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related editorial chase or technical operations
  • Strong background in live and live-to-tape radio broadcast engineering.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Windsor-Essex, the people who call it home and the issues that matter most to them.
  • Solid journalistic skills
  • Excellent production skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.
  • Ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently, and meet deadlines
  • Innovative, flexible, calm under pressure, able to make quick decisions in a live radio environment as needed
  • Takes direction well, works co-operatively but also a self-starter.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable interacting and presenting material live on-air
  • Innovative, with proven ability to use sound creatively
  • Open to new ideas and approaches
  • Strong organizational skills
  • An understanding that you are working for a journalistic organization, which requires flexibility in shifts including early mornings, evening and weekend work.

We want to hear you, and see the work that you’ve done. Please include a link to your portfolio, website, video or blog in your cover letter.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
