Your Opportunity:

We are currently looking for a Full-Time Physiatry Associate Physician to join the Calgary Brain Injury Program and the Section of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Associate Physicians are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Clinical Neurosciences, functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s), making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Associate Physicians are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position you will care for patients with brain injury across the continuum of care, working within a multidisciplinary team in PMR on the inpatient brain injury unit at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) and in outpatient brain injury and concussion clinics. Calgary is a rapidly growing cosmopolitan city with a population of over 1.2 million people and an excellent school system. Besides the rich academic environment. Successful candidates will participate in an enhanced 5-week orientation program (including targeted Connect Care training) specifically for international medical graduates. This time will be considered part of the initial orientation and assessment period.

Description:

The Associate Physician (AP) will work with the brain injury physician team to screen and triage inpatient and outpatient referrals, round on the inpatient brain injury unit, and see new and follow-up patients in specialty brain injury and concussion clinics alongside PMR specialists. The AP will provide patient education in person and virtually to reduce the number of clinic appointments required, and will liaise with allied health and with the community groups (CAR, ARBI, SABIS) delivering rehabilitation after brain injury. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team that includes physiatrists, neurologists, residents, medical students, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and nursing attendants, and will attend PMR resident teaching, relevant rounds, and biweekly multidisciplinary rounds. Once the probationary period is complete, it is anticipated the AP will manage an outpatient roster as well as inpatients patients under the supervision of a staff physiatrist. Appropriate supervision and support will be provided, including a comprehensive orientation and competency assessment process.

Responsibilities:

• Rounding and ongoing management of neurologic and medical problems on the ward
• Triage of referrals and support of the referral process for inpatients and outpatients
• Assessment of new and follow-up patients in outpatient clinics across the continuum of brain injury care
• Procedures within approved competency and scope of practice
• Transition planning, discharge planning, care discussions and family meetings
• Participation in educational rounds, case discussions, and interdisciplinary team meetings
• Accurate and timely clinical documentation
• Participation in quality improvement initiatives in brain injury care

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or individuals holding valid open work permits. As required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through the Academic IELTS examination with minimum scores of 7.0 in each component unless exempt under CPSA policy. Candidates must hold a medical degree from a medical school outside Canada or the United States that is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Directory, and must have completed at least one full year of hands on, supervised postgraduate medical education outside Canada and the United States. Applicants must have successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1) and must be eligible for registration under CPSA’s Limited Practice Registry for supervised practice.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Candidates must submit a current Curriculum Vitae and an AHS Clinical Assistant/Associate Physician Eligibility Pre Screen Letter with their application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant is responsible for maintaining licensure with the CPSA throughout employment. AHS requires all applicants to complete a pre screening process to confirm eligibility for CPSA registration; details are available on the AHS Medical Staff website. Applicants must demonstrate currency of practice within the last three years, either through independent practice, supervised regulated practice, or continuous postgraduate training for at least one year in the discipline. Fellowship training, community service, public service, national service, Medical Officer roles, and general practice experience do not meet currency of practice requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with recent experience in an acute care facility, specifically within the last 3 years in PMR; experience caring for patients with brain injury, including concussion, in both acute care and rehabilitation settings; and demonstrated skill in neurological examination.
