Job summary

Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a Physiotherapist I to join our Inpatient Acute Care team on a medicine/surgery/orthopedic unit (~30 beds). You’ll provide physiotherapy to patients recovering from acute illness, surgery or trauma.

As part of an interprofessional team, you’ll assess, design and implement rehabilitation plans, collaborate across rounds, support discharge planning, and document care in Connect Care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy and active Alberta registration.
• Heart and Stroke CPR (BLS-HCP) certification is required.
• Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Proven ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Alberta’s busiest tertiary hospital, is seeking a dedicated Physiotherapist to join our Inpatient Acute Care team.

RAH serves over 500,000 patients annually across one-third of Canada’s landmass and is home to specialized programs including Level 2 Trauma/ICU, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Stroke, Cardiac Care, and the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. Our Rehabilitation Department is an integral part of the exceptional care delivered at the RAH.

About the Role:

This role starts on a medicine/surgery/orthopedic unit (~30 beds). You’ll provide physiotherapy to patients recovering from acute illness, surgery, or trauma.

Key Responsibilities:

Assess functional status post-fall, surgery, or trauma; develop and adapt treatment plans; deliver mobility, cardiorespiratory, gait, and pain interventions; recommend and facilitate rehab equipment; collaborate with interprofessional teams and attend rounds; support discharge planning and provide patient/family education; document care in Connect Care.

Manage patients with complex physical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs; participate in mentorship, student supervision, pursue advanced practice learning and quality initiatives; provide care during shared evening/weekend rotation.

Description:

As the Physiotherapist I (PT), you will provide therapeutic interventions to enable clients to achieve optimum physical function and independence in development, disease, disability, chronic conditions, illness and functional decline.

You will provide intervention (i.e. prevention, triage, screening, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, treatment, management, education, consultation, fostering resourcefulness, case management, referral and transition support to individuals, groups, populations and communities.

You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. The PT collaborates with patient(s) and families in determining, implementing and evaluating appropriate rehabilitation strategies.

You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich supports and engage in quality improvement; partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families and other stakeholders to advance services for their clients.

You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community; participates in peer mentoring; and supervises students. You may provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides and Provisional Physiotherapists.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited university program. Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta.
• Heart and Stroke CPR (BLS-HCP) certification is required.
• Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills, along with proven success working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
• Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities are essential.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required.
• Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) is expected, and experience with Connect Care is preferred.
• As work tasks and charting are computer-based, candidates must be able to perform extensive repetitive motion tasks and tolerate long periods of sitting or standing.
• The role also requires participation in hands‑on patient care, including assisting with transfers, supporting bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances.
• Candidates must be able to regularly lift and carry weights of 10–15 kg as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the assessment and treatment of the geriatric patient population.
• Knowledge of community resources, equipment acquisition, continuum of care, and discharge planning.
• Mentoring Physiotherapy students is an asset.
• At least 1-year recent experience in an adult inpatient acute care setting preferred; at least one acute care placement for new grads.
• Experience working with complex medical patient populations, including end‑of‑life care, chronic disease management, and dementia.
