Alberta Health Services seeks an Associate Physician to join the Medical Affairs department in Calgary, Foothills Medical Centre. The role involves pre-anesthetic evaluation, perioperative planning, and coordination with physicians, nurses, and allied health staff within an anesthesiology team.

You will participate in an orientation program for IMGs and work under physician supervision, with a 2-week shift pattern and rotating days/nights.

Qualifications

• Must be Canadian citizen or permanent resident with AHS pre-screening letter.
• Graduate of a medical school outside Canada/USA listed in IMED/FAIMER directory.
• Postgraduate medical education: at least 1 year outside Canada/USA with hands-on supervised specialty training.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a pre-anesthetic consult with focused history and physical.
• Co-develop peri-anesthetic plan including preoperative optimization and orders.
• Enter orders into electronic record and outline anesthetic management options.
• Inform patient of plan and document preferences.
• Involvement in clinical research and care of patients on research trials.

Clinical Assistants are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS); functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals. Clinical Assistants are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position you will deliver care to patients in preassessment clinics (PAC) primarily at FMC with some coverage at SHC, RGH, PLC sites within a multidisciplinary team in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.Depending on start date, successful candidates will participate in an enhanced 5-week orientation program (including targeted Connect Care training) specifically for international medical graduates. This time will be considered part of the initial orientation and assessment period.

Description:

You will be working alongside physicians, nurses, and other health care providers. Job duties are to conduct a pre-anesthetic consult including a focused history and physical and review of relevant laboratory results, diagnostic tests/imaging. Having reviewed this information with the attending anesthesiologist, co-develop the peri-anesthetic plan including, but not limited to, preoperative optimization and preparation, writing appropriate orders, entering these orders into the patients’ electronic record, identification of anesthetic management options including post-operative disposition and perioperative pain management, informing the patient of the plan, understanding and documenting patient preferences. Clinical research is important in this field of practice, and the care of patients registered on research trials is an important part of the role.

Preferred Qualifications:

It is anticipated this will be a highly competitive job posting. Preference will be given to applicants who have recent experience in an acute care facility; specifically, those who have had experience within the last 3 years in Anesthesiology.
