About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of an attending staff person:

-Functions as a member of the team in the assigned service. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff.
-Liaises with nurses, housestaff, attending staff and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
-Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans. Attends team/family conferences when time permits.
-Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
-Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts, collecting consent for surgery and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff. If available for emergency issues in-house.
-Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence (equivalent of PGY3) according to established policies or protocols (ie. wound management, aspiration of joints.)
-Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
-Working with critically ill patients in the step-down unit as part of the IMCU team.
-Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
-Participates in outpatient clinic services if required.
-Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits.
-Interacts with, teaches and supervises medical students and residents (rare and as time permits).
-Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service during the daytime, with possible weekend day call


These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted annually by the Program Director / Supervisor. Failure to meet performance standards may result in termination.

About You

-Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (cpsns.ns.ca/resource/clinical-assistant-licence) Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. -CMPA coverage required
-ACLS certification required
-Good command of written and spoken English
-Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
-Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are consider assets
-Physical demand-Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
-Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
-Competencies in other languages an asset;French preferred

-Permanent, full-time position, 96 hrs bi-weekly

Compensation and Benefits

$52.69 - $67.12 Hourly
