Job summary

Ornge in Ontario invites a visionary physician leader to become Associate Medical Officer, Clinical System Innovation. You will drive provincial strategies, advance care access, and coordinate with CritiCall to transform emergency care across rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities.

You will partner with executive leaders, physicians, and government partners to implement system-level initiatives that improve access and outcomes, while guiding a high-impact, collaborative team.

Qualifications

• MD with certification in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care (CCFP(EM), FRCPC EM, or equivalent).
• Minimum 10 years of progressive clinical and physician leadership experience.
• Deep understanding of Ontario’s healthcare system, including acute/critical care, consultation services, and transfer pathways.

CritiCall, a division of Ornge, serves as Ontario’s critical care coordination service, connecting patients, physicians, hospitals, and specialized care across the province.

In this unique provincial leadership role, you will serve as the clinical face of CritiCall’s system innovation mandate, partnering with healthcare executives, physicians, government leaders, and system stakeholders to drive transformative initiatives that strengthen system integration, improve care coordination, and support more equitable access to critical care services across Ontario.

This is not a traditional Associate Medical Officer role. It is an opportunity for a physician leader to influence healthcare delivery at the system level, build strategic relationships with senior healthcare and government partners, and champion initiatives that drive meaningful improvements for patients and providers across Ontario.

Key Accountabilities

Lead Clinical System Innovation and Health System Transformation

• Lead the development and execution of provincial strategies that improve patient referral, consultation, triage, transfer, and repatriation processes across Ontario.
• Advance innovative models of care that improve healthcare access, quality, and patient outcomes.
• Champion initiatives that strengthen access to specialized and critical care services for rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities.
• Identify and drive opportunities for continuous improvement across the patient care continuum.

Build Strategic Partnerships and Influence System Change

• Serve as a provincial clinical leader, bringing together physicians, healthcare organizations, government partners, and system stakeholders to advance shared priorities.
• Build trusted relationships with Ontario Health, the Ministry of Health, hospital executives, clinical leaders, and healthcare partners across the province.
• Represent Ornge and CritiCall at provincial forums, committees, and strategic discussions.
• Navigate complex healthcare issues with credibility, diplomacy, and influence.

Drive Quality, Performance and Clinical Excellence

• Lead quality improvement initiatives that strengthen patient care, service delivery, and system performance.
• Use clinical, operational, and system insights to identify opportunities and inform strategic decision‑making.
• Ensure initiatives align with patient safety standards, regulatory requirements, and healthcare best practices.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability.

Shape Provincial Healthcare Strategy

• Contribute to organizational and provincial planning efforts by aligning innovation priorities with healthcare system needs.
• Provide expert clinical and operational advice to executive leaders on emerging opportunities and challenges within the healthcare system.
• Help define and advance the long‑term vision for how critical care services are delivered across Ontario.

Foster Leadership, Collaboration and Engagement

• Bring diverse stakeholders together to solve complex healthcare challenges and advance system‑wide initiatives.
• Mentor and support physicians, leaders, and partners in driving innovation and healthcare transformation.
• Lead with an inclusive and collaborative approach that builds trust, engagement, and alignment.

Required Qualifications

• Medical Doctor (MD) with certification in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care (CCFP(EM), FRCPC Emergency Medicine, or Critical Care equivalent).
• Minimum 10 years of progressive clinical and physician leadership experience within a complex healthcare environment.
• Deep understanding of Ontario’s healthcare system, including acute care, critical care, consultation services, and patient transfer pathways.
• Demonstrated experience leading complex healthcare transformation, innovation, quality improvement, or system integration initiatives.
• Proven ability to influence and build relationships with physicians, hospital leaders, healthcare partners, executive leaders, and government stakeholders.
• Strong strategic thinking and systems‑thinking capabilities, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and drive meaningful change.
• Exceptional communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead difficult conversations, build consensus, and achieve outcomes across diverse stakeholder groups.

Preferred

• Experience in emergency medicine, critical care, trauma, critical care transport, pre‑hospital care, or related healthcare environments.
• Experience working with Ontario Health, the Ministry of Health, provincial clinical programs, or healthcare system governance bodies.
• Knowledge of healthcare delivery challenges and opportunities in rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities.
• Diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Area of Focused Competency in Prehospital and Transport Medicine (DRCPSC).
• Experience representing an organization as a spokesperson, thought leader, or strategic advisor in provincial healthcare discussions.
