Job summary

MDW Family Law is seeking an Associate Family Lawyer who is passionate about helping families and delivering exceptional client service. The role emphasizes collaboration, practical advocacy, and ongoing professional development in Nova Scotia.

You will handle family law matters, conduct client meetings, draft documents, and represent clients in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings. A NS Bar admission or eligibility is required, with 3–7 years of experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • 3–7 years of legal experience.
  • Family law experience (preferred, but not required).
  • Practical courtroom experience.
  • Membership in good standing with the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, or eligibility to become a member.
  • Strong legal research, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and advance client files with appropriate guidance and support.
  • Meet with clients to provide legal advice and move matters forward.
  • Represent clients in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
  • Prepare legal documents, correspondence, and court materials.
  • Attend court appearances and other legal proceedings.
  • Work collaboratively with lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while delivering exceptional service.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and success of the firm.

What We're Looking For

You will ideally have:

  • Approximately 3-7 years of legal experience
  • Family law experience (preferred, but not required)
  • Practical courtroom experience
  • Membership in good standing with the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, or eligibility to become a member
  • Strong legal research, drafting, and analytical skills
  • Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A professional, client-focused approach
  • The ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team
  • A willingness to learn, grow, and contribute to the firm's continued success
  • Bilingual (English/French) skills are considered an asset
