Job summary

Simon Fraser University seeks a qualified professional to manage its research portfolio, spanning pre/post award activities and reporting. You will coordinate development sessions for faculty and ensure compliance data support for accreditation, reporting to the FHS leadership with precision.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related discipline.
  • Three years of health sciences experience including research support and data handling.
  • Experience writing grants, proposals, and contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Support pre- and post-award activities for external research funding.
  • Regularly report the unit's research income and activities.
  • Coordinate research development sessions (seminars; Tri‑Council sessions).
  • Provide data support for accreditation requirements.
  • Act as primary contact for external partners (First Nations Health Authority, BC Centre for Disease Control).

About the Role

This position works closely with the FHS Associate Dean Research and FHS Director, Research on supporting all aspects of the research portfolio; this spans pre and post award support to continuing and adjunct faculty, regular reporting of the unit's research income and activities, and coordination of research development sessions for faculty (research seminars; Tri-Council competition sessions; tenure and promotion processes, strategic planning), and data support for accreditation requirements. This position works within a highly collaborative, tight knit, highly functional management culture. Our team is focused on and takes pride in delivering exceptional support to faculty for their research and to help prevent and reduce administrative burden associated with research.

The position plays a critical partnership development role by being the primary point of contact for select external partners (First Nations Health Authority, BC Centre for Disease Control, etc.) for inquiries on both pre- and post- award activities related to external research funding.

The ideal candidate will have experience in grant writing for Tri-Council or other funding agencies, have advanced training in academic writing in a health-related discipline, ideally in the biological sciences. They will be detail-oriented, tactful, intellectually curious, coachable, demonstrate critical thinking and exceptional communication skills in giving critical feedback to faculty at all career stages; is self-motivated and able to work and problem solve independently, and has (or is willing to acquire) training in inclusion, social justice, equity, Indigenous cultural safety. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for leadership roles in the future.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in the Biological Sciences or a relevant discipline and three years of directly related experience in the Health Sciences including the development and writing of successful research papers, grant proposals and/or contracts, participation in research projects at the graduate level, data collection/database management, and data analysis; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Microsoft 365 and Excel proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to establish priorities and to work on different initiatives concurrently within timelines and deadlines.
