Job description

Area of Interest: Financial markets and treasury

As an Associate Director on the Specialized Transactions and Products, Legal team in Toronto (part of the Financial Markets division at National Bank of Canada), you will act as an expert advisor in the sector, ensuring compliance of business practices related to mortgage aggregation, asset acquisition and finance, securitizations, and derivatives with regulatory requirements. You will provide high-quality legal services, manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks, and advise on legal matters in a fast-paced environment.

Your role :

  1. Monitor and address statutory requirements related to securitization, asset acquisition and finance, mortgage aggregation, and derivatives across Canada.
  2. Support NBC’s Asset Acquisition and Finance, Securitization, Mortgage Derivatives Business, Risk Management Solutions Group, and Global Securities Finance teams.
  3. Develop, structure, and document securitization, asset acquisition and finance, mortgage aggregation, and derivative transactions.
  4. Participate in legislative, business, or industry initiatives representing NBC’s legal interests.
  5. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders including legal, regulatory, compliance, taxation, and accounting teams.

Your team

You will work with a team of 15 lawyers and paralegals in Toronto and Montreal, reporting to the Managing Director, who is also based in Toronto. The team is known for its efficiency, responsiveness, expertise, and dynamism.

Basic requirements :

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in securities law, secured lending, or related transactional roles in an in-house legal department or a recognized law firm.
  • LL.B./J.D. from a recognized law school and good standing with the Law Society of a Canadian province.
  • Expertise in capital markets legal and regulatory issues, advising on securities and banking law in Canada, US, and G20 countries.
