Job summary

RBC Capital Markets in Toronto seeks an Associate Director - Lead Developer to design, develop, test, and maintain mission-critical market data software supporting global analytics. You will coach teammates and contribute to the MDI platform used across cross-asset markets.

The role requires 7+ years building critical software, strong KDB+/q expertise, and proficiency in Linux, Python, and CI/CD tools in a fast-paced financial environment.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of industry experience building mission-critical software applications.
  • 2+ years hands-on with KDB+/q.
  • Experience analytics on large time-series market and transaction data.
  • Good understanding of capital market products including reference and transaction data.
  • Experience with market data products (NYSE TAQ, TRTH, Bloomberg, Exegy, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Linux environments and scripting languages (Bash, Python).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and tools (Git, Jenkins, Nexus, Jira, Docker).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of different trading products like equities.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to build new and maintain real-time and historical data services and statistical functions.
  • Deepen understanding of existing analytical libraries and broaden the current offering.
  • Add features and enhance KDB+/q framework for server and client applications.
  • Work with teammates to determine best practices and client requirements for software.
  • Develop intuitive software that meets company needs and exceeds expectations.
  • Maintain software and release updates addressing customer and company concerns.
  • Analyze and test programs before formal launch; troubleshoot issues quickly.
  • Proactively seek ways to improve business software processes and interactions.
  • Aid and coach teammates to ensure confidence in software usage.

The role involves designing, developing, testing, and maintaining mission-critical software while collaborating with teams and coaching colleagues. What will you do?
  • Work with business Stakeholders to build new and maintain existing real-time and historical data services and statistical functions on top of the data.
  • Develop an in depth understanding of existing analytical libraries and help to broaden current offering.
  • Add new features and enhance existing functionality to KDB+/q framework for server and client side applications used by capital markets.
  • Collaborate with team members to determine best practices and client requirements for software
  • Develop intuitive software that meets and exceeds the needs of the company
  • Professionally maintain all software and create updates regularly to address customer and company concerns
  • Analyze and test programs and products before formal launch
  • Troubleshoot coding problems quickly and efficiently to ensure a productive workplace
  • Actively seek ways to improve business software processes and interactions
  • Aid and support the coaching and training of other team members to ensure all employees are confident in the use of software applications
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have:
  • 7+ years Industry experience building mission critical software applications
  • 2+ years of strong hands on experience with KDB+/q
  • Experience performing analytics on very large data sets, typically time series market and transaction data
  • Good understanding of Capital Market products including Reference and Transaction data
  • Experience with any market data products specifically NYSE TAQ, TRTH, Bloomberg, Exegy etc.
  • Good working knowledge of Linux environments, and scripting languages such as Bash, Python
  • Experience with Agile methodology and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Nexus, Jira, and Docker
  • Good communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of different trading products like equities, etc.
Nice-to-have:
  • Experience with database applications and working knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with any AI coding tools like Copilot, Claude, windsurf etc.
  • Working knowledge of C++/Java is a plus
  • Understanding of global markets and algorithmic trading stack
  • Knowledge of Pre and Post trade analytics, machine learning and pattern recognition is advantageous
  • Understanding of build and deployment management
