DUTIES

The Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) invites applications for a full-time, two-year Limited Term Contract (LTC) as a bipartite instructor at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Adventure Studies Department.

About the Department:
TRU’s Adventure Studies program is recognized as a leader in the field of adventure, providing students with exceptional learning experiences that foster physical, mental, and emotional growth. The department is committed to decolonization, diversity, equity, and inclusion, respecting the traditional territories of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, Tʼexelc, and other Indigenous communities we serve.

Position Overview:
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, leadership and research related to the scholarship of teaching and learning (or in a specific discipline) within the field of adventure and or the adventure industry. Responsibilities include instructing both classroom and field-based courses, mentoring students, and participating in departmental administration. The role requires strong communication, risk management, and administrative skills.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver classroom-based courses covering topics such as adventure programming, guiding leadership, business and marketing for adventure operations, the adventure tourism industry, wilderness travel, environmental considerations, risk management, and instructional skills.
  • Instruct field courses in areas such as hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering and ski touring. Instructional expertise in other areas of the Adventure Studies curriculum may also be considered.
  • Organize, plan, manage and oversee field courses, including staffing, equipment requirements, and transportation.
  • Mentor students, support their academic and professional development, and engage in departmental service and special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate from an adventure or related program is an asset.
  • Relevant adventure industry certifications and field experience.
  • Association of Canadian Mountain Guide-Full Mountain Guide preferred, Assistant Guide Certification in Alpine/Rock/Ski Guiding (or in process). Instructor or examiner qualifications issued by other adventure-related governing bodies may also be considered.
  • Teaching experience, with a demonstrated ability to innovate in classroom and field instruction.
  • Experience with curriculum design, indigenization, diversity, and inclusion an asset.
  • Current Advanced Wilderness First Aid certification.
  • Class 2 or 4 driver’s license.

Pay Band: $73,665.93 - $114,124.39 (According to TRUFA Salary Schedule (Range TS01 - TS12))
