Job summary

YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka in Barrie is seeking an Assistant Teacher for the Georgian College YMCA Child Care location. This full-time, temporary role (minimum 3 months, with extension) supports nurturing environments and play-based learning for up to 15 children, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

You will provide personal care, ensure safety, plan activities, communicate with families, and work with staff to maintain ratios.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • First Aid/CPR (Level C) certification or completion within 90 days of employment.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Up-to-date immunizations or equivalent as per local public health and Child Care Early Years Act.
  • Access to reliable transportation to all locations within the community.
  • Availability Monday to Friday, 30-40 hours per week, 7:00 am–6:00 pm.
  • Passion for working with children and providing quality play-based learning.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills with families, staff and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Ability to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care to children (toileting/diapering, first aid, medication, dietary considerations).
  • Engage with children and supervise a group of up to 15 children.
  • Plan and implement play-based learning per YMCA Curriculum.
  • Maintain positive, professional communication with families, staff and volunteers.
  • Provide an inclusive environment supporting children with exceptional behaviours and additional needs.
  • Demonstrate behaviours aligned with YMCA Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Adhere to work schedule to maintain ratios and provide notice for scheduling changes.

Position: Assistant Teacher
Status: full-time, temporary for a minimum of 3 months with the possibility of extension
Intended locations: Georgian College YMCA Child Care, Barrie
The opportunity: To build healthy, strong, connected communities through nurturing environments for children.
In this role, you will:
  • Provide personal care to children, including but not limited to toileting/diaper changing, providing first aid, administering medication, monitoring dietary, allergies & medical conditions
  • Actively engage with children and always ensure supervision and safety of children in a group setting of up to 15 children independently
  • Plan and implement play-based learning in accordance with YMCA Curriculum
  • Ensure positive, professional communication with families, staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis
  • Provide an inclusive environment, supporting the needs of all children, including those with exceptional behaviours and additional needs
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values
  • Adhere to work schedule to ensure program stays within ratio and provide adequate notice to supervisor regarding unexpected scheduling changes
  • Demonstrate flexibility with routines and schedules
  • Other duties as assigned
For this role, you bring:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Current Standard/Intermediate First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification OR completion of certification within first 90 days of employment
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Up-to-date immunizations or equivalent in accordance with local public health and Child Care Early Years Act
  • Access to reliable transportation that can get you to all locations within the community in a timely manner
  • Availability requirement s: Monday to Friday, 30-40 hours per week, between the hours of 7:00am & 6:00pm
  • Passion for working with children and providing quality play-based learning
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills with families, staff and volunteers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), and participate in physical activities
  • Ability to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round, in all weather conditions
