The Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream Assistant Professor in Medieval Philosophy. This joint appointment (75% Philosophy, 25% Centre for Medieval Studies) is based in Toronto with anticipated start July 1, 2027.

The successful candidate will demonstrate research excellence in medieval Latin philosophy and a strong teaching record across undergraduate and graduate levels, contributing to interdisciplinary medieval studies.

The Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in Medieval Philosophy. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Philosophy (75%) and the Centre for Medieval Studies (25%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Philosophy, Medieval Studies, or a closely related field by the date of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching covering medieval Latin philosophy. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated through a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications that meet high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees.

The successful candidate must be able to teach a wide range of courses in philosophy and medieval studies from the introductory to advanced levels, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

The expected salary range is $130,000-$170,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
