Job description

Department of Materials Engineering
Assistant Professor in High Temperature Metals Processing

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in high-temperature metals processing (in exceptional cases a tenure-track, or tenured, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over its long history, the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC has distinguished itself with excellence in research, teaching and service in Materials Engineering. The Department has a strong record of collaborative work within UBC and industry and promotes interdisciplinary research. Through the study of high-temperature processes and their influence on material behaviour and product quality, this appointment will strengthen connections among extractive metallurgy, physical metallurgy and manufacturing at UBC.

We seek an emerging researcher with a strong foundation in heat transfer and transport phenomena, supported by expertise in several of the following: fluid flow, thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and solidification. Relevant research areas include: continuous, shape casting and other processes involving solidification; high-temperature extraction, recycling and refining; plasma processing, furnaces and thermal treatment, and other relevant areas. Applications addressing energy efficiency, emissions reduction, resource recovery and product quality are of particular interest.

The candidate will integrate physically grounded mathematical models with novel experimental approaches to identify controlling mechanisms, improve sustainability, process performance and enhance product quality. Experience designing coupled experiments/simulations, making measurements under challenging process conditions, or investigating processes at laboratory, pilot or industrial scales is valued. Applicants should demonstrate depth in a defined research area and a vision for extending their expertise across materials, processes and scales. Expertise in every area listed is not expected; diverse intellectual interests, engineering judgement and potential for growth will be important considerations.

The successful candidate will develop an independent, internationally recognized research program and seek funding, both individually and collaboratively, from government and industrial sources. Responsibilities will also include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising master’s and doctoral students, and providing service to the University and the broader community. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an equitable, diverse and inclusive learning and research environment that is respectful of all students, staff and faculty.

Teaching contributions are expected in thermodynamics, transport phenomena, kinetics and materials processing, with additional contributions (e.g., developing new courses) aligned with the candidate’s expertise. The appointee will be encouraged to build collaborations across departmental research areas and sustained industrial partnerships that connect fundamental research with practical process improvements.

A Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or a related field is required. Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of research achievement and teaching ability, or clear potential to excel in these areas, relative to career stage. The successful candidate must be registered or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). Registration is required within five years of appointment. For more information, please visit www.egbc.ca.

Further information on the Department is available at www.mtrl.ubc.ca and information on the Faculty of Applied Science is available at https://apsc.ubc.ca/faculty.

UBC recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, leaves due to illness, leaves due to caring for family members, slowdowns due to chronic illness or disability, or COVID-19 impacts) can have on research achievement and commits to ensuring that leaves are taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. Candidates are encouraged to highlight in their application how career interruptions and personal circumstances have affected their careers.

The University of British Columbia's primary language of instruction and research is English. Accordingly, individuals are required to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

The initial closing date for applications is midnight January 4, 2027, but applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.

The Faculty of Applied Science is committed to offering equitable salaries, taking into consideration the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate as well as their years in rank. The expected starting salary range for the Assistant Professor position is $120,000 - $130,000 per annum. The expected starting salary range for the Associate Professor position is $165,000 - $185,000 per annum. This position is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package. For details, see https://hr.ubc.ca/benefits.

The University of British Columbia hires on the basis of merit, assessed in areas of scholarly activity, teaching and service, and is committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive and equitable work environment for all members of its workforce. An inclusive work environment presumes an environment where differences are accepted, recognized, and integrated into current structures, planning, and decision-making modes. Within this hiring process we will make efforts to create an inclusive and equitable process for all candidates (including but not limited to people with disabilities). Confidential accommodations are available on request for all candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.
