Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education.
  • Six months of civil works experience related to road construction, maintenance, and signs and markings.
  • Traffic Control Person Certificate.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification.
  • Annual renewal of Driver’s Abstract; Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with layout and preparation work for road construction and widening.
  • Assist with curb, gutter, sidewalk and catch basin installations.
  • Support landscaping, gravel road-base grading, asphalt paving, road markings and electrical conduits.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as asphalt hot boxes, cut saws, rollers, power tools, blowers, power washers and paint machines.
  • Assist with asphalt placement and compaction, concrete work, pothole patching, gravel shouldering, roadside maintenance, traffic-control flagging, graffiti removal and cleaning above-ground infrastructure.
  • Assist with storm-response activities, including snow and ice control, flooding and wind events, following safe-work practices.

Assistant Operations Worker

PERMANENT FULL-TIME POSITION

DISTRICT OF SAANICH ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

PUBLIC WORKS STREET OPERATIONS

The District of Saanich is a vibrant municipality on southern Vancouver Island, delivering essential services that support safe, reliable and well-maintained public infrastructure. Within the Engineering Department’s Public Works Division, Street Operations plays a key role in maintaining the roads, sidewalks, signage and related assets residents and businesses depend on every day.

The Public Works – Street Operations team is seeking an Assistant Operations Worker to perform skilled manual work in support of road maintenance, construction and signs and markings activities. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, dependable and able to work effectively as part of a crew in a physically demanding outdoor environment.

In this role, you will assist with layout and preparation work for road construction and widening, curb, gutter, sidewalk and catch basin installations, landscaping, gravel road-base grading, asphalt paving, road markings and electrical conduits. You will operate and carry out daily maintenance on equipment such as asphalt hot boxes, cut saws, rollers, power tools, blowers, power washers and paint machines. Responsibilities also include asphalt placement and compaction, concrete work, pothole patching, gravel shouldering, roadside maintenance, traffic-control flagging, graffiti removal and cleaning above-ground infrastructure. You will assist with storm-response activities, including snow and ice control, flooding and wind events, while following all applicable safe-work practices, policies and procedures.

Requirements include Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of education and experience; six months of civil works experience related to road construction, maintenance, and signs and markings; a Traffic Control Person Certificate; Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification; and annual renewal of a Driver’s Abstract. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather and requires sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina and coordination to perform the work. This is a C.U.P.E. Local 2011 position with a wage of $35.72 per hour (2026 rate) plus an excellent benefits package.
