Job summary

City of Saskatoon is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Technician to support the Environmental Labs team. The role involves assisting with analyses of water and environmental samples, preparing solutions, and contributing to data summaries for reports.

Under supervision, you will perform field tests, collect samples, and maintain equipment for the monitoring program, while ensuring safety and CALA-compliant lab procedures. This position requires a two-year tech program and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of water quality and treatment processes.
• Ability to follow operating laboratory procedures to maintain CALA accreditation.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Physical ability to perform the duties.
• Skill in operating a computer to summarize data.
• Graduation from a recognized two-year post-secondary program in the relevant fields or eligibility for membership.

Responsibilities

• Assist with analyses of surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and related samples.
• Prepare laboratory solutions and materials for tests and analyses.
• Assist with special tests and investigations related to environmental enquiries and surveys.
• Prepare data summaries for reports.
• Conduct field tests and environmental sampling for water, wastewater, air and soil.
• Collect samples and maintain equipment for the industrial monitoring program.
• Maintain laboratory work areas and equipment; perform routine maintenance.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position is a CUPE 47 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Environmental Labs Coordinator, this position assists with the preparation of data summaries and performs wastewater, surface water, industrial effluent, and groundwater analyses.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assists with analyses of surface water, groundwater, storm sewer, wastewater, industrial waste etc.
• Prepares laboratory solutions.
• Assists with special tests, including investigations related to environmental enquiries, complaints and surveys.
• Assists with the preparation of summaries of data for reports.
• Assists with the performance of field tests and environmental sampling for water, wastewater, air and soil.
• Collects samples and maintains equipment for the industrial monitoring program.
• Prepares materials and equipment for tests and analyses, including performing routine maintenance.
• Cleans laboratory work areas, including glassware replacement.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of water quality and treatment processes.
• Ability to follow operating laboratory procedures in order to maintain Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA).
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
• Skill in the operation of a computer to summarize data.
• Graduation from a recognized two-year, post-secondary program in Water Resources Engineering Technology, Chemical Technology or Biological Sciences Technology OR Eligibility for membership in a constituent member of the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists in the bioscience, chemical or water resources engineering technology field.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, recognized first aid certificate.
• Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence
• Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Requires Security Check

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) upon offer of employment.

Weekly Hours:38.75

Salary Range:$47,171.28to$66,883.92 CADper annum (2023rates)
