Job summary

SGS is seeking an entry-level laboratory support role in Canada. The position involves sample reception, preparation, and analysis, with responsibilities spanning logging in LIMS, sample storage, and calibration of equipment.

The role requires a high school diploma or science-related post-secondary education as a strong asset, and no prior experience is required. Hours include rotating shifts (days, evenings, weekends) with potential travel to other SGS locations or client sites.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent) is required.
  • A post-secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in a Science related program (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science) is a strong asset.
  • No Experience required.
  • Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples & lab equipment
  • Must be comfortable with numerals to monitor data on a computer screen
  • Must read, understand and follow work instructions safely and accurately
  • Able to work well under pressure during high workloads with quality results
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Duties include sample reception, identification, preparation, dilutions, setting up analytical batches and analysis, batch QC, and LIMS.
  • Ensure samples are logged into LIMS quickly and accurately.
  • Maintain and store samples, assist personnel in locating samples, and handle disposal or return to clients.
  • Calibrate and set up laboratory equipment prior to analysis and record calibrations.
  • Prepare standards and reagents and interpret results.
  • Monitor equipment maintenance and laboratory supplies.
  • Follow health, safety and environmental policies and keep a clean working environment.
  • Follow quality system protocols and report discrepancies to the Supervisor.
  • May work in other areas of Environmental Services lab and coordinate special projects as needed.
  • Travel to SGS locations or client sites may be required.

Job Description

This is an entry-level position, which would not be eligible for relocation support for candidates that need to relocate to the Peterborough / Lakefield area. Public transit is limited for those without vehicles. This role also requires availability to work shifts on a rotating schedule (Days, evenings and some weekends).

  • Duties may include sample reception, sample identification, sample preparation, sample dilutions, setting up analytical batches and analysis, batch Quality Control, (the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ensure samples are logged into LIMS accurately and in a quick manner.
  • Working knowledge of LIMS
  • Ensure samples are catalogued and stored in an efficient and easily retrievable manner.
  • Assists laboratory personnel in locating and retrieving of samples and also responsible for sample disposal or returning samples to clients.
  • Calibration and set up of laboratory equipment prior to analysis.
  • Maintain and record equipment calibrations.
  • Preparation of standards and reagents.
  • Interpreting and evaluating results.
  • Monitor Equipment maintenance & laboratory supplies.
  • Follow all company health, safety and environmental policies.
  • Maintains a clean working environment.
  • Follow all Quality system protocols, report discrepancies to the Supervisor.
  • May be asked to work in other areas of the Environmental Services laboratory sections.
  • May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.

  • Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client locations may be required from time to time.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
