The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership and functional supervision and as needed, performs front line Registered Nurse duties. As a member of the AHN team on the new Surgical Care Unit - 5 East, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with unit leadership to foster a positive working environment while adapting to the needs of the busy 36-bed surgical unit. In doing so, the AHN will be expected to promote and model leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning.

Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required.Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required.Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:3 years of recent (within the last two years) inpatient surgical nursing experience. 1 year of recent (within last two years) and related inpatient surgical charge nurse experience. Ability to independently take a patient assignment as required. Ability to respond to a code blue or rapid response. Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (up to 5 hours per 8 hour shift). Ability to lift/transfer up to 30 kg (66 pounds) multiple times per shift, ability to lift 5 kg (8-11 pounds) above shoulder. Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills. Demonstrated reliability. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Proficient in working within a computerized environment including Microsoft Office and Outlook. Ability to work in a high paced, highly stressful environment and to de-escalate tense situations through strong conflict resolution skills.
Preferred Qualifications:Must be proficient working in a computerized environment including MS Office Suite. Must be flexible, tactful with a positive reinforcement style and excellent conflict resolution skills. Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Must be self-motivated, self-directed and able to implement resolutions: must have excellent problem-solving skills. Committed to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices.
