Job description

Assistant General Manager (AGM)

Modern Steak | Calgary, AB
Full-Time | Management

About Modern Steak

Modern Steak is a premium Calgary steakhouse built around exceptional Alberta beef, genuine hospitality, and a modern approach to the traditional steakhouse experience.

We are looking for an experienced Assistant General Manager who understands that great restaurants are built through strong leadership, consistent standards, attention to detail, and a team that is engaged and accountable.

This is a hands-on leadership position. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable leading a busy service, coaching a team member, connecting with guests, reviewing labour and sales, and working alongside the General Manager to continually improve the restaurant.

The Role

As Assistant General Manager, you will work closely with the General Manager and Chef team to oversee the day-to-day operation of the restaurant.

You will be a visible leader on the floor and play a key role in developing the front-of-house team, maintaining service standards, driving sales, controlling costs, and ensuring every guest receives the level of experience expected from Modern Steak.

This is not a desk-management position. You will be present, engaged and actively leading during service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee daily front-of-house operations
  • Act as Manager on Duty and take ownership of the restaurant during assigned shifts
  • Maintain Modern Steak's service, hospitality and presentation standards
  • Lead pre-shift meetings and communicate clear priorities to the team
  • Coach, develop and hold team members accountable
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training and ongoing employee development
  • Build a positive, professional and performance-driven workplace culture
  • Develop strong relationships with guests and recognize regular clientele
  • Proactively manage guest concerns and service recovery
  • Support reservation management, table flow and overall guest experience
  • Work closely with the culinary team to ensure strong communication between FOH and BOH
  • Monitor sales, labour, productivity and operating costs
  • Assist with scheduling and labour management based on forecasted business levels
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales and improve restaurant profitability
  • Support wine, cocktail, food and service training
  • Maintain restaurant cleanliness, organization and overall physical standards
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta liquor regulations, food safety requirements and company policies
  • Assist with inventory, ordering and administrative responsibilities as required
  • Support special events, wine dinners, private dining and restaurant programming
  • Help the General Manager execute company initiatives and continuously improve the operation
Who We're Looking For

The right candidate is an experienced hospitality professional who genuinely enjoys restaurants and understands what it takes to operate at a high level.

You are confident without being arrogant, accountable without being negative, and able to establish standards while still building a team people want to be part of.

You understand the difference between simply managing a shift and leading a restaurant.

Ideally, You Have:
  • 3+ years of restaurant management or senior supervisory experience
  • Experience in an upscale, premium-casual, fine-dining or high-volume restaurant environment
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills
  • Excellent guest-recovery and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong understanding of restaurant labour and cost controls
  • Experience with scheduling and staff development
  • Strong food, wine and beverage knowledge
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to remain composed and make good decisions during high-volume service
  • A genuine passion for hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences
  • ProServe certification or ability to obtain it
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required
What Success Looks Like

A successful AGM at Modern Steak:

  • Builds a strong, engaged and accountable team
  • Leads from the floor rather than from the office
  • Knows what is happening in the restaurant at all times
  • Develops employees instead of simply directing them
  • Creates regular guests, not just transactions
  • Protects service standards even when the restaurant is busy
  • Understands the numbers and takes ownership of results
  • Communicates effectively with both FOH and BOH leadership
  • Notices the details before a guest has to point them out
  • Brings solutions when problems arise
  • Makes the restaurant better because they are there
Why Modern Steak?

Modern Steak is an established Calgary restaurant brand with a strong reputation, a premium product and a commitment to showcasing Alberta beef.

For the right hospitality professional, this position provides an opportunity to take on meaningful operational responsibility, develop as a senior restaurant leader, and build a long-term career with a growing hospitality company.

We are looking for someone who wants more than their next restaurant management job.

We are looking for someone who wants to help lead a great restaurant.
