Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in Canada seeks a Human Factors Engineer to lead HF work packages for nuclear and energy projects, including design, verification and usability analyses.

You will apply HF methods, conduct task analyses, human-system interface design, and support bids with rigorous technical delivery in regulated industries. Hybrid work model with opportunities for professional development and security clearances.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Engineering, HF & Ergonomics or related field.
  • Experience delivering HF work packages in high hazard industries such as Nuclear.
  • Minimum 5 years using Human Factors methods and techniques.
  • Experience with Nuclear HF Guidelines (NUREG-0711/0700) and REGDOC-2.5.1.

Job description

Overview

The Human Factors Engineering department is responsible for providing engineering support from a Human Factors perspective to the design of nuclear power generation equipment, digital instrumentation and control systems for projects involving control, monitoring, and operator displays in the nuclear island for existing customers and new builds.

Typical assignments will include leading client Human Factors and Ergonomics work packages, managing technical delivery to project programs as well as leading and contributing to AtkinsRéalis bids and initiatives. As a member of a client focused team, the position may entail opportunities to work on a wide variety of projects across a range of sectors of industry including Nuclear and Energy Transition, Defence, and other Transportation and Infrastructure areas.

The job position expects the candidate to make a positive contribution to the development plans of the Human Factors team, using entrepreneurial thinking and excellent communication skills to liaise with other groups and departments to provide integrated solutions to the client. With the anticipated career growth, the candidate will also enjoy mentoring and developing junior staff, be reliable and consistent, and have an acceptance of responsibility for work carried out.

Your role
  • Development of Human Factors Engineering Program Plans (HFEPPs) per CNSC REGDOC 2.5.1. REGDOC 2.5.2 and CSA N290.12-23).
  • Development of HF Verification and Validation plans per CNSC REGDOC 2.5.
  • Conducting HF Function and Task analysis.
  • Human-System interface design.
  • Usability testing and validation exercises.
  • Workload analysis and other HFE analysis techniques as required.
About you
  • University degree in Engineering, Human Factors (HF) & Ergonomics or Applied Psychology or related field.
  • Membership/Fellowship of a recognized professional society (e.g., Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE) designation, awarded by the Canadian College for the Certification of Professional Ergonomists (CCCPE)).
  • Experience in delivering HF work packages within high hazard industries such as Nuclear.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the use of Human Factors methods and techniques.
  • Experience in the application of nuclear industry Human Factors Guidelines (e.g. NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700, MIL-STD-1472).
  • Experience in the application of Human Factors analyses as described in the Human Factors Engineering Program Review Model (NUREG-0711 by US NRC) and General Design Considerations: Human Factors (REGDOC-2.5.1 by CNSC)Knowledge in the application of Human Factors standards and guidelines, specifically the Human-System Interface Design Review Guidelines (NUREG-0700 by US NRC) and/or Department of Defense; Design Criteria Standard: Human Engineering (MIL-STD-1472).
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in managing and planning HF delivery to projects (HF Integration).
  • Experience in working within other 'Regulated' industries.
  • Knowledge in the application of HF Integration in the context of Safety Case development, Quantitative Human Reliability Assessment, Training Needs Analysis will be an added asset.
  • Knowledge in the application of CANDU utility procedures and guidelines is desired.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.
