Job description

Overview

The Component Integrity (CI) group provides specialized engineering, assessment, and analytical services to support the safe, reliable, and long-term operation of CANDU nuclear generating stations. The group is responsible for the integrity assessment and life management of key reactor components, including fuel channels, feeders, steam generators, piping systems, and other safety-significant plant equipment.

As part of the CI group, the incumbent is responsible for performing Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessments of major CANDU reactor components. This includes evaluating component condition, degradation mechanisms, structural integrity, remaining life, and operational fitness using engineering analyses, applicable codes and standards, inspection data, and industry best practices. The role supports plant operations, maintenance, refurbishment, and long-term asset management by providing technically sound recommendations that ensure continued safe and reliable service.

Your role

  • Develop and apply in-house analytical tools and scientific computation codes to support Fitness-for-Service (FFS) and component integrity assessments.

  • Perform advanced finite element analyses using commercial tools such as H3DMAP, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, PIPESTRESS, ABAQUS and similar software to evaluate flaws, deformation, and nonlinear component behavior.

  • Conduct deterministic and probabilistic FFS assessments, including flaw evaluation, structural integrity assessments, and remaining life evaluations for reactor components.

  • Lead and support R&D projects with academic, industry, and utility partners to advance assessment methodologies and analytical capabilities.

  • Provide technical support and interface with the Civil, Piping, Mechanical, Field Services and other engineering groups through the preparation of engineering assessments, stress reports, structural evaluations, and technical documentation.

  • Independently plan and execute engineering assignments requiring sound technical judgment, innovation, and minimal supervision.

  • Develop recommendations based on inspection data, operating experience, engineering analyses, and applicable codes and standards.

About you

  • Master's degree or higher in Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical, or Civil Engineering preferred.

  • P.Eng. designation in Ontario, or eligibility for registration strongly preferred.

  • Experience with finite element analysis, probabilistic methods, statistical analysis, and parallel computing.

  • Knowledge of CANDU reactor components, particularly fuel channels, feeders, and steam generators.

  • Familiarity with CSA, ASME, and API codes related to piping, pressure vessels, FFS assessments, and stress analysis.

  • Understanding of degradation mechanisms and failure modes affecting CANDU reactor components.

  • Expertise in Computational Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, and Mechanical/Metallurgical Testing.

  • Strong analytical and programming skills with MATLAB, Python, R or similar tools.

  • Strong communication, technical writing, teamwork, and project planning skills.

  • Ability to work independently and effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Willingness to qualify as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).
