Job summary

Upper Canada Child Care in Thornhill is seeking an Assistant Educator for a casual supply role to support before/after school programs in a split-shift arrangement. You will work in a licensed, ministry-guided environment with a focus on play-based learning and outdoor exploration.

Qualifications

  • Recent Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
  • Health assessment and immunization records as outlined by legislation.
  • Up-to-date CPR-C and Standard First Aid certification.
  • Experience with inquiry/play-based program design is an asset.
  • Experience with pedagogical documentation such as Storypark is an asset.
  • Ability to use computer systems including Dayforce and Storypark.
  • Strong communication with families, coworkers and professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Ministry and organizational guidelines for a developmentally appropriate, play-based program.
  • Participates in professional development, staff meetings and training as required.
  • Engages with children to provide a positive learning experience and assist with meals and care tasks.
  • Fosters communication with parents about the program and children.
  • Completes program charts, daily logs and reports; uses Storypark for documentation.
  • Collaborates with team members, school personnel and outside agencies to support all children.
  • Guides students/volunteers and helps design individual support plans as needed.
  • Identifies children needing additional support and guides parents to access resources.

Upper Canada Child Care - “A smile on each child’s face…every day.”

We are currently recruiting an Assistant Educator to join our Team in Thornhill at the following location: St. Giovanni Battista CES.

This position is to fill an existing vacancy.

Pay Range:

Assistant Educator $20.60 - $23.54/hour (includes General Operating Grant) plus Wage Enhancement Grant (up to $2.00/hr) and Split Shift Premium ($2.00/hr).

*Candidates must be available to work a split shift in a before and after school program.

Position Type & Required Availability:
  • Casual Supply status (variable hours): Candidates must be available to work a minimum of 5 assigned shifts every month.

Position Summary:

To ensure operational and curriculum requirements are met in compliance with all Ministry and organizational guidelines. To ensure the delivery of a developmentally appropriate, play based program by applying specialized skills and knowledge related to early childhood education. Supports the organization’s vision, mission, and guiding values. This is a fully in-centre position.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Applies current legislative expectations to support a program that is consistent with Ministry of Education requirements and in accordance with Upper Canada Child Care’s program statement.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities, staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Engages with the children and provides a positive learning experience. Provides a range of care including assisting with meals/snacks, toileting, diapering, dressing, etc.
  • Fosters the engagement of and ongoing communication with parents about the program and their children.
  • Completes program charts, daily logs, reports, and other administration tasks as required.
  • Uses Storypark for pedagogical documentation as a guide for program development.
  • Effectively collaborates and communicates with other team members, school personnel, and outside agencies to help support the needs of all children.
  • Provides guidance to students and volunteers as needed.
  • Identifies children in need of additional support. Guides parents through the process of accessing resources. Helps design and implement individual support plans as required.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • A recent Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Health assessment and record of immunization, as outlined by legislation.
  • Up-to-date certification in CPR-C and Standard First Aid (training provided upon selection if required).
  • Basic knowledge of the developmental needs of children and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Experience with inquiry/play based program design and implementation, and with the use of pedagogical documentation an asset.
  • Uses initiative; applies sound reason in solving problems and resolves conflict in a calm, professional manner.
  • Proven ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively and establish appropriate relationships with families, coworkers and other professionals.
  • Have the physical and emotional stamina to effectively supervise children in a variety of settings including outdoor public spaces.
  • Ability to use computer systems and programs; including Dayforce, and Storypark.
  • Moderate level of physical effort is regularly required; including but not limited to kneeling, pushing, pulling, bending, and carrying.
