Job summary

Canadian Pacific Railway is seeking an Assistant Director Signals and Communications to lead S&C operations, guiding both unionized and non-union teams. You will oversee testing, planning, materials management, and the supervision and development of signal personnel while maintaining a strong safety culture.

You will coordinate maintenance strategies, manage subcontract scopes, and ensure adherence to standards and budgets across the Calgary region.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Electrical Engineering is an asset.
  • 10 years of S&C maintenance, construction and testing/commissioning experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an integrated maintenance plan aligned with S&C standards.
  • Oversee maintenance and construction activities within the territory and recommend regional upgrades.
  • Oversee testing services to ensure safe, reliable S&C plant delivery on schedule and budget.
  • Utilize the collective agreement to support effective work management.
  • Mentor and develop S&C employees in apprenticeship programs and provide leadership guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with safety plans and drive response to emergencies in a 24/7 environment.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Assistant Director of Signals and Communications (S&C) Operations plays a key leadership role in supporting and guiding both unionized and non-union S&C teams. In this dynamic position, you will help drive the safe and efficient delivery of signals and communications operations, overseeing areas such as testing, planning, materials, inventory management, and the supervision and development of signal employees.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Develop and deliver an achievable integrated maintenance plan aligned with S&C standards
  • Accountable for all maintenance and construction activities within the territory, including recommending regional capital upgrades
  • Oversee testing services to ensure a safe, reliable, maintainable S&C plant delivered on schedule and within budget
  • Fully utilize the collective agreement to support effective work management
  • Assist with preparation of subcontract scopes of work and ensure compliance with CPKC maintenance, testing, commissioning standards, and work methods
  • Oversee S&C employees in the apprenticeship program while providing mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to leaders and craft employees
  • Oversee CPKC’s health and safety plan for the region
  • Demonstrate reliability and flexibility in a 24/7 operational environment, responding quickly to emergencies to reduce service interruptions
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Electrical Engineering is an asset
  • 10 years of S&C maintenance, construction and testing and commissioning experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and successful information exchange

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company or regulated drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program
