Job summary

CPKC is seeking a Signals & Communications Helper in Saskatchewan to contribute to the construction and upkeep of railway signal systems. You will receive comprehensive, paid training and work alongside seasoned professionals to develop essential technical and hands-on skills.

After training, you may apply for the Signal Maintainer Apprentice program, a respected pathway into railway operations and technology.

Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid driver's license; commercial license preferred.
Background in agriculture, mechanics, electronics, electrical systems, or construction trades an asset.
Available for nights, weekends and holidays in all weather; may require relocation within District 3.

Responsibilities

Diagnose and repair signal equipment to maintain functionality.
Dig, cable repair, pole line work, and wiring while installing signal equipment.
Identify malfunctions, troubleshoot, and restore operations.
Adapt signal timing to train schedules and track conditions.
Install new components and replace worn parts to uphold system integrity.
Document signal system operations and maintenance for compliance.
Ensure signal visibility and safety compliance at all times.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

As a Signals & Communications (S&C) Helper, you’ll receive comprehensive, paid training while working alongside seasoned professionals dedicated to helping you develop essential technical and hands‑on skills. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

Diagnose and repair signal equipment such as lights, track circuits, relays, and crossing gates to maintain optimal functionality
Perform tasks like digging, cable repair, pole line work, housekeeping, and wiring while assembling and installing signal equipment
Identify malfunctions within signal systems, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions to restore reliable operations
Adapt signal timing to accommodate train schedules and track conditions, ensuring efficiency and accuracy
Install new signal components and replace aging or worn‑out parts to uphold system integrity and performance
Maintain thorough documentation of signal system operations, maintenance activities, and adjustments for compliance and operational consistency
Monitor and ensure precise signal visibility and functionality while strictly adhering to safety regulations and standards

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 18 years of age
High school diploma or general equivalency
Valid driver’s license: commercial driver’s license is preferred
A background in agriculture, mechanics, electronics, electrical systems, and the construction trades is considered an asset
Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to provide clear and concise information to team members and stakeholders
A strong emphasis is placed on adhering to safety protocols and maintaining vigilance to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your team
Must have the ability to relocate within District 3 (Swift Current, SK to Thunder Bay, ON)

Medical and Drug Testing
