Job summary

Natural Resources Canada seeks an Assistant Deputy Minister to lead the Fuels Sector. You will guide policy development and strategic direction at the center of Canada’s energy priorities, coordinating across government and industry to advance conventional and low-carbon fuels both nationally and internationally.

You will manage a large, diverse team, travel as needed, and report to senior government leadership with a focus on delivering results and upholding integrity.

As the Assistant Deputy Minister, Fuels Sector at Natural Resources Canada, you will lead work at the centre of Canada’s energy and economic priorities. The Fuels Sector supports Canada’s national energy priorities across the fuels and biofuels industry, leading a whole-of-government approach to policies and programs that advance conventional and low-carbon fuels domestically and internationally. Its work contributes to reducing emissions while enabling economic growth, supporting workers and communities — including Indigenous communities — and strengthening energy security and affordability.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in developing, analyzing and providing strategic policy/commercial advice and recommendations to senior level management (Deputy Minister and Minister; CEO, Board of Management) on complex issues in a government and/or industry context.
  • Extensive experience in establishing and maintaining effective partnerships and negotiating agreements with representatives of the federal government, other governments (provincial or municipal) as well as with the private sector, stakeholders and partners.
  • Experience leading and motivating large and diverse teams, fostering innovation to propel outcomes, and exercising financial leadership and setting strategic direction/policy.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive experience analyzing Canadian fuels markets and applying market intelligence to inform strategic, policy, investment or regulatory decisions across the fuels value chain.
  • Extensive experience applying financial and economic analysis to the development of strategic policies and investment plans, including assessing economic impacts, investment opportunities, risks, trade-offs and resource allocation options.
  • Experience leading large complex teams of policy or business experts and engineers/ analysts
  • Experience and/or knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of program management in the federal government.
