Job summary

MierHuman Capital is recruiting on behalf of a Peel Region, ON retailer for an Assistant Controller role within Finance. You will lead day-to-day full cycle accounting, month-end and year-end closes in line with GAAP and internal controls.

Reporting to the Finance Director, you will supervise Accountant and Treasury staff, partner with auditors, manage cash flow, banking, asset and inventory processes, and drive efficient financial reporting.

Qualifications

• University degree in Business/Accounting with professional designation (CA/CMA/CGA) or equivalent experience.
• 5-7 years of financial accounting, reporting and variance analysis experience.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Extensive experience in retail/multi-unit environment.
• Strong data presentation skills and clear communication.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong problem solving, organizational and time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage the month-end and year-end close processes with variance analysis.
• Streamline financial reports and reporting processes for efficiency.
• Perform daily cash flow projections to ensure funding and compliance with loan agreements.
• Oversee finance activities related to gift cards, property management, taxes and reimbursements.
• Handle banking, corporate credit cards, risk management, reconciliations, inventory counts and insurance.
• Manage capital and fixed asset processes.
• Coordinate external audits, prepare working papers and engage with auditors.
• Hire, develop and train direct reports.
• Perform other duties as required.

Our client in Peel Region, ON is actively looking for an Assistant Controller to join their team. The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day full cycle accounting activities including month-end and year-end close processes in accordance with GAAP and internal financial controls. This role is also responsible for ensuring that financial reporting is delivered in an accurate and timely manner. This position will report directly into the Finance Director and has two reports: Accountant and Sales Audit/Treasury Assistant.

Position Description:

• Manage the month-end, year-end financial close process though analysis and reporting of variances to budget and forecast.
• Streamline financial reports and reporting processes to deliver more efficient, effective and value-added reporting.
• Perform daily cash flow projections to ensure adequate funding of the Company's daily operations and compliance with its Loan agreement.
• Manage all finance activities related to gift cards, property management, commodity tax and recycling remittances and reporting.
• Manage activities related to banking, corporate credit card, risk management, balance sheet reconciliations, year-end inventory count and insurance.
• Manage the capital and fixed asset processes.
• Manage all activities related to external audits of financial statements. This includes preparing working papers, financial statements and working with external auditors to clear all audit issues.
• Responsible for hiring, evaluating, developing and training direct reports.
• Other related duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

• University degree in Business/Accounting, with professional accounting designation (CA/CMA/CGA) or equivalent direct experience.
• 5-7 years of financial accounting, reporting and variance analysis work experience.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial systems integration.
• Extensive experience and understanding in a retail and/or multi-unit industry and/or multi-product line environment.
• Solid data presentation skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
• Effective attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
• Effective problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.
