Job description

Our client is a well-established and highly successful Canadian transportation and logistics company with a long-standing reputation for operational excellence and continued growth. The organization operates an extensive asset-based network across Canada and the United States, providing FTL, LTL, transportation, distribution and warehousing services to a diverse customer base.

Due to continued growth, the organization is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its finance team in Mississauga. Reporting to senior finance leadership, this role will provide broad responsibility across financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls and financial analysis, while working closely with operational leaders to improve profitability, cost control and business performance.

This is an excellent opportunity for a CPA-designated accounting professional who wants to take on a meaningful leadership role within a complex, operationally driven transportation environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting and the month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Oversee day-to-day AP, AR and general accounting activities.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and supporting financial records.
  • Assist with consolidated reporting across multiple locations and business units.
  • Prepare financial analysis and management reporting for senior leadership.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Business Analysis
  • Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Analyze financial and operational results, identifying trends, variances and opportunities for improvement.
  • Monitor key transportation cost drivers and provide insight into profitability and cost control.
  • Partner with operations to understand financial performance and develop corrective actions.
  • Analyze areas such as freight revenue, fuel, labour, fleet maintenance, equipment, terminal and warehouse costs and customer profitability.
Controls, Audit & Process Improvement
  • Assist with maintaining and strengthening internal financial controls and accounting policies.
  • Coordinate and support external audit activities and preparation of audit schedules.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate accounting processes.
  • Support financial system implementations, integrations and technology initiatives.
  • Improve reporting accuracy, efficiency and data integrity through enhanced processes and tools.

The successful candidate will have:

  • CPA designation and a strong accounting foundation.
  • Several years of progressive accounting/finance experience.
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and month-end/year-end close.
  • Experience overseeing AP, AR and general accounting functions.
  • Strong financial analysis and management reporting capabilities.
  • Experience with internal controls and external audits.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team development experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong analytical abilities.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems and an interest in technology and process improvement.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience within asset-based transportation, trucking, logistics, distribution or warehousing would be highly valued.

Candidates who understand the financial dynamics of transportation—including fleet and fuel costs, freight billing, labour, equipment, terminal expenses, customer profitability and operational KPIs—will be particularly well positioned for success. Strong CPA candidates from other asset-intensive or operationally complex industries will also be considered.

Reimer Associates thanks all applicants for their interest. We will review applications and contact candidates whose qualifications most closely align with our client's requirements. Due to the volume of applications received, we are unable to respond individually to every applicant. All applications will be treated confidentially.
