Job summary

The Okanagan Regional Library in Kelowna and Rutland is seeking Auxiliary On-Call Community Librarians to support branch services with the Community Librarian and Branch Supervisor, including coverage during vacations and short absences.

Applicants should have Grade 12, at least one year of customer service experience, familiarity with mobile tech and Microsoft Office, and be available for peak times, weekends, evenings, and the April training session.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • One year of work or volunteer experience with the public in a service setting.
  • Good oral and written communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Community Librarian/Branch Head in service to the public.
  • Provide coverage for vacation and sick time of permanent staff.

$28.98-$30.41 per hour

About the Okanagan Regional Library (ORL)

Located in beautiful British Columbia, the ORL stretches from Golden in the Rocky Mountains through the wine and fruit producing lands of the Okanagan Valley to the semi-desert Osoyoos at the US border. It is a vibrant library system, with 30 branches, serving 26 diverse communities, over 300 employees and a service population of over 400,000 people.

The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Community Librarian, Branch Services Supervisor or the System Circulation Coordinator, the incumbent assists the Community Librarian/Branch Head in all phases of service to the public and assumes responsibility for branch services when the Supervisor is absent for a short period of time. The incumbent exercises some independent judgement within established Okanagan Regional Library policies, procedures, and practices.

As an Auxiliary On-Call employee, the expectation is to provide coverage for the vacation and sick time of Permanent Employees.Auxiliary staff must be available for 'Peak Times' such as weekends, evenings, and days before and after holidays.

Job Specification
Education:

Grade 12 or equivalent

Related Experience:

One (1) year work or volunteer experience working with the public in a customer service or educational setting, i.e.; retail/restaurant or leading recreation/cultural programs or classes.

Other Requirements
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Familiar with mobile technology, ie; apple or android phones or tablets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Internet
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Word & Excel and Outlook.
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Aptitude for detailed work.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with initiative, courtesy, tact and interest with staff and all sectors of the public.
  • Physical ability to handle book bins, boxes of books and loaded book trucks
  • Basic knowledge of cash procedures
  • Commitment to continuous learning.
  • Valid BC driver’s license.
  • Must be available for training session April 27th to May 1, 2026, 2026: 8:30-4:30 in Kelowna.
