Job summary

Saint Mary's University in Halifax is seeking an ASL-English Staff Interpreter (Science) to join the Interpreting Services team. You will provide ASL-English interpretation for signing Faculty, Staff, students, and researchers across STEM disciplines, including lectures, seminars, and defenses.

We seek an experienced, certified interpreter with a strong commitment to accessibility and collaboration with researchers and educators while applying current best practices in academic interpreting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of recognized Sign Language Interpreter Training Program and holds a sign language interpreting diploma or degree.
  • CASLI Certificate of Interpretation (COI) or RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent, or in process to achieve certification.
  • Active membership in CASLI or in process.
  • Minimum five years' experience in English - American Sign Language interpreting.
  • Ability to travel worldwide and must hold a valid passport (or able to obtain one).
  • Valid driver’s license; 3 years clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for ASL-English interpretation for signing Faculty and Staff, students, and colleagues in STEM settings.
  • Consults with Interpreting Services Manager, Faculty, Staff and students on inclusive approaches and policy.
  • Keeps up to date with research on best practices for Academic Interpreting.
  • Reviews and prepares interpretation for diverse high-level materials (courses, meetings, conferences).
  • Prepares preparation material packages with the Interpreting Services Manager.
  • Tracks interpreting service provisions with the Manager.
  • Supports managing technical & field equipment, including PPE.
  • Sourcing professional development opportunities for the Office; reviewing best practices to implement.
  • Performs special projects related to academic interpreting and related topics.

Job Information And Responsibilities
  • Assumes responsibility for American Sign Language (ASL)-English interpretation for signing Faculty and Staff members, students, and colleagues, including but not limited to classroom lectures, seminars, graduate defenses, administrative and research meetings, national and international conferences, and field research. These settings may include advanced scientific materials in a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) disciplines.
  • Consults and collaborates with Interpreting Services Manager, Faculty, Staff and students on innovative approaches to academic interpreting, inclusivity, and policy.
  • Keeps up to date with research on best practices for Academic Interpreting
  • Reviews and actively prepares for interpretation of a variety of technical materials including undergraduate & graduate studies research projects, high level meetings, course offerings, department meetings, research programs, etc.
  • Prepares preparation material packages for Office in collaboration with Interpreting Services Manager.
  • In collaboration with the Interpreting Services Manager, tracks interpreting service provisions.
  • Supports Interpreting Services Manager, as necessary, with managing technical & field equipment, including PPE.
  • Sourcing professional development opportunities for the Office; reviewing new best practices in profession that can be incorporated in the University.
  • Tasks as assigned by the Interpreting Services Manager.
  • This includes the development of special projects related to academic interpreting, scientific ASL and/or related topics under the direction of the Manager to meet changing workload demands.
Experience And Education Requirements
  • Completion of recognized Sign Language Interpreter Training Program and holds a sign language interpreting diploma or degree. An undergraduate university degree is an asset. Other education, professional, and training experiences outside of interpreting training programs are also assets.
  • CASLI Certificate of Interpretation (COI), or RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent, or have initiated the process to achieve certification.
  • Holds Active membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) or has initiated the process.
  • Minimum five years' experience in English - American Sign Language interpreting.
  • Ability to travel worldwide and must hold a valid passport for international travel (or be able to obtain such passport).
  • Valid driver's license; and 3 years clean driving record.
  • Comfortable in outdoor settings, including in and around water.
  • Comfortable being physically active while interpreting, such as being in the field for interpreting.
  • Ability to learn and analyze high-level professional communication in ASL and English as well as the ability to accommodate a variance of communication registers.
