Job description

Wage range : $44.03 to $56.50 per hour

Primary locations : CASA Houseand CASA Centre

Union : Out-of-Scope

Classification : Art Therapist

FTE : 0.40 FTE (7.25 hours per week)

Status : Contract

CASA’s Day Programs provide individually tailored therapies through a variety of modalities, while also providing education in a small, therapeutic classroom setting. The family and care team work together to support the child or youth’s social, emotional, academic and physical development. Children and youth are encouraged to strengthen their existing abilities and develop new skills. Areas of focus include social skills, academic functioning, and emotional and sensory awareness. Students attend the program daily during the school year.

CASA House is a live-in program for teens who need support with significant mental health and / or addictions challenges. Teens stay at CASA House for an average of four months. The program involves parents and caregivers as active participants in treatment. Treatment includes individual, group and family therapy, social and life skills training, and on-site schooling in small classroom settings.

The Art Therapist will :

  • Develop, administer and coordinate the art therapy program in consultation with the patient’s primary therapist and the program leadership team.
  • Deliver consistent weekly groups (two each for the Children’s Day Program and Adolescent Day Program, and two for CASA House); individual patient sessions as determined with the patient’s clinical team.
  • Meet the needs and therapeutic goals of each patient.
  • Implement art interventions that facilitate non-artistic goals such as sensory stimulation, positive failure, free exploration and socialization.
  • Participate in determining therapeutic objectives and goals from an art therapy perspective.
  • Coordinate, organize and implement art therapy programs in accordance with the clinical programs.
  • Ensure each patient’s physical, social, intellectual, spiritual and sensory emotional needs are met through group therapy in accordance with regulations.
  • Develop and maintain accurate records and communication to support clinical programming.
  • Consult with CASA Mental Health clinicians regularly.
  • Work from a trauma informed, milieu therapy and Dialectal Behaviour Therapy (DBT) approach, as needed.

Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in art therapy from a program approved by the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA).
  • Professional membership in good standing with CATA.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with children and adolescents in a tertiary care setting.
  • Experience facilitating groups is preferred.

Conditions of Employment

  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA), as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.
