Job summary

A residential construction company in Alberta is seeking an Architectural Technologist to join their drafting and design team. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and modifying production drawings for single-family homes. An Architectural Technology diploma and up to 3 years of drafting experience are preferred. Excellent communication and multi-tasking skills are essential. Qualifications

  • Completion of an Architectural Technology diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • 0-3 years’ experience in single family residential construction drafting is preferred.
  • A valid class five (5) driver’s license is required.

About The Position

The Architectural Technologist is a member of the drafting & design team, responsible for creating and altering work production drawings for single family homes.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze building codes, by-laws, space requirements, site requirements and other technical documents and reports.
  • Prepare computer-assisted design (CAD) drawings.
  • Create and alter work production drawings for single family homes, duplexes, and townhomes.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and engineers to obtain all necessary documentation for development and building permit applications.
  • Work with sales personnel and the construction team to customize floor plans and problem solve construction issues.
  • Ensure all architectural projects and permit applications are on time and completed when due.
  • Address and overcome obstacles that may arise due to bylaw requirements, code requirements, customer preferences, grading issues, etc.
  • Contribute to planning applications and other regulatory application procedures.
  • Assess what surveys (e.g., land surveys) are required before work can commence and ensure such surveys are undertaken and their results fed into the project.
  • General administrative duties for design department, as required.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Completion of an Architectural Technology diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • 0 – 3 years’ experience in single family residential construction drafting is preferred.
  • Experience using SoftPlan or any other drafting program is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand architectural drawings and construction details required.
  • Experience working for a home builder is preferred.
  • A general knowledge of permit applications and city approval process is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, Part 9, or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) bylaw requirements; knowledge of architectural guidelines is an asset.
  • Able to learn and understand fire safety construction requirements for Edmonton and surrounding communities.
  • Able to communicate efficiently in a professional manner – verbal and written.
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage several on‑going projects simultaneously.
  • A valid class five (5) driver’s license and reliable personal transportation is required.
  • Criminal records check to the company’s satisfaction is required.
