Job summary

City of Cambridge in Ontario is seeking an Arborist within the Operations Division - Infrastructure Services to prune, remove trees, and supervise work at heights using approved climbing and safety equipment.

You will drive, inspect and operate a range of equipment, record tree conditions and respond to inquiries from the public and staff, with duties across all weather conditions and safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Arboriculture or MTCU 444A equivalent required.
  • ISA Certified Arborist in good standing is required.
  • Minimum 3 years urban forestry experience.
  • Valid Class D license with Z endorsement.
  • Ability to operate urban forestry equipment safely.

Responsibilities

  • Prune and remove trees and clean the site of debris.
  • Work at heights using approved climbing and safety equipment.
  • Assist others at heights with ropes or as spotter.
  • Drive, operate and inspect trucks, aerial devices and chainsaws.
  • Determine and implement traffic management using OTM Book 7.
  • Inspect trees, record conditions and recommend action.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and tools.
  • Receive inquiries at job site from public, utilities and staff.
  • Perform forestry operations in all weather conditions.
  • Work in accordance with health and safety legislation and city policies.
  • May perform other duties related to major responsibilities.
  • Forestry training and experience related to duties listed above.

Job Profile

The City of Cambridge currently has an opening for Arborist within our Operations Division - Infrastructure Services Department, available immediately.

What you will be doing
  • Prune and remove trees; clean site of debris.
  • Work at various heights performing tree maintenance and tree removal, using aerial device and/or manual climbing using approved climbing and safety equipment and techniques.
  • Assist those working at heights in the handling of ropes or acting as a spotter.
  • Drive, operate and inspect various equipment including trucks, tractors, aerial tower, chain saws, pruners, brush chipper, tree stumper and other associated equipment and techniques.
  • Determine and implement traffic management using OTM Book 7.
  • Inspect trees; record condition and problems; recommend action.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment and tools such as greasing, sharpening and adjusting.
  • Receive and answer inquiries at job site from public, utilities and staff.
  • Perform forestry operations under all weather conditions.
  • Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Cambridge corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.
  • Forestry trade related training and experience related to the duties listed above normally acquired by a combination of education and work experience.
  • Candidates are required to have a Diploma in Arboriculture (two semester program) or Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MTCU) Certified apprenticeship designation in Arboriculture (444A) or equivalent.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of tree morphology, physiology and dendrology of those trees common to the Cambridge area.
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist designation in good standing is required.
  • Minimum 3 years’ urban forestry experience.
  • Technical knowledge required. Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures in performing Urban Forestry trade type work.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate urban forestry equipment including, but not limited to, chain saws, brush chippers, 8-ton crane truck, stumping machine and aerial devices.
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to climb trees with rope and saddle, rigging working at various heights.
  • Ability to perform aerial rescue and have advanced roping and rigging techniques.
  • Must possess a valid “Class D” License with a “Z” endorsement.
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties related to the job requirements. Lifting up to 28kgs repeatedly and climbing.
  • Experience in electronic work order systems and GIS is required.
  • Book 7 trained and experience in flagging and road closures.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management, advanced tree identification and able to diagnose tree related health issues/ treatments.
  • A shared On-Call schedule over weekends and evenings is a requirement.

  • Current and valid Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.
  • Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
  • Worker Health & Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour
  • Valid DZ driver's license
Hours of Work

The regular work schedule is: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Flexibility is required as the position must be able to work evenings and weekends when operational needs arise. The role includes scheduled on‑call responsibilities and requires working in all weather conditions as needed.

Your compensation

This position is located within our CUPE 32 (outside workers union) compensation salary schedule Job Grade 7 and has an hourly rate of pay is as follows (2026 Rate):
Starting Rate: $35.93 per hour
12-Month Rate: $37.04 per hour
24-Month Rate: $38.16 per hour
